After 20 years, Richard Chafin is leaving the Brooks County Sheriff's Office. His tenure saw such milestone changes as the BCSO Victims Advocates office, the crushing abolition of shot houses in Brooks, the construction of a new jail after 15 years of wrangling with stingy old money commissioners and the introduction of technology that surpasses that of agencies 10 times the size of BCSO (to name a few).

Richard had a mixture of old school Sheriffin' with new school law enforcement techniques. Unique amongst his peers, he truly did have an open door policy. What's more, most times he'd put on a pot of coffee and make you a cup while you talked about your troubles.

Richard bent over backwards to help troubled employees, and everyone always got a second chance. He worked against the odds recruiting and retaining staff, only able to offer them half to two-thirds of what neighboring counties make (once again thanks to closed pocketbooks of commissioners).

He managed to move forward in a locality that was moving backwards. His partnerships with progressive civic leaders led to some outstanding projects. His vision for the future included expanion of the jail to include courtrooms, and more staff to better protect the Brooks citizens. His Beach Trips with the kids are (to this day) unprecedented and indicative of his stance on being a Sheriff.

I saw a picture once as he escorted a bank robber from a bank in Troupeville after talking him down (instead of shooting him). That picture speaks a thousand words, and is almost all inclusive of the man I know as Sheriff of Brooks County.

Thank you, for a job well done, Sheriff.

Keep a pot of coffee on. I'll stop by.

There's a lost vote for JD. You might want to think about where someone lives before you start running roughshod at the mouth.

So, what has he stolen, this crook friend of mine?

Folks don't always vote the most qualified or loyal. They have a tendency to vote as a popularity contest.

You might want to check with the Brooks voters on that one.

And yet he wasn't. Why were his first 10 years so good? Everything was good until he locked you up?

Maybe someday, you'll have someone that remembers you the way some people will remember him. It's called a LEGACY. You might want to get started on yours after your court date.

I think I'll take your advice.

I'll remember him as a mean spirited person who abused his power in a number of ways as did his family members. His wife was mean and his step-daughter Lexie even meaner. Who else could fool around with a teacher and get away with it? That wife of his had a trash mouth and would call up and cuss out anybody that got in her way. What could you do about it? Nothing because he was the sheriff!

So let him take his trashy family and legacy away. Brooks county sure does not need it. Tell him to stop by Michaels and get a scrap book for all of his memories... they have a 50% off coupon in sunday's paper that he can use!

I didn't think so.

So, you say he's a mean spirited man and then take jabs at his family? What's his family got to do with it? The Sheriff is the Sheriff, not his family or friends.

On top of that, no one has said anything about what he's done that's so bad, except some supposition about him "fooling around" with a teacher? Yet no one has proof?

I'm not stupid enough to think anyone is perfect or without sin. A man's accomplishments, however, speak for themselves. If you didn't like his personality, oh well. So be it. The things he created will stand long after he's gone.

Just in time for someone else to come in and screw them all up.

It wasn't him that fooled around with the teacher. It was his step-daughter Lexie but did anything get done? No! Just because she was his daughter....

What about the under age drinking done at his house with the booze bought by him and his wife? What if one of those kids had wrecked on the way home? What would you have said then? Still goes on to this day. Guess if someone gets killed you are gonna chalk that up to his legacy?

A trip to the beach for the needy might be nice but it does not cover for all of the other bad things that he has done. You can't pick and choose who you want to arrest and that is what he has been doing for the past 10 years. The power of the office went to his head.

Times are a changing and thank God and the voters for that!

This election was not about ethics. If it was, there'd have certainly been more questions about his challenger. This I know as fact. I simple open records request would have brought that to light.

Your allegations I do not know as fact.

I can say this, though: On the surface, neither candidate publicly slung mud, which was to their credit.

I know why Richard wasn't reelected, he lost touch with his citizens, I had a problem with one of his deputies, he called and cussed me out while he was on duty, I called and left messages for Richard for three weeks, I then mailed him a letter with a request to call me back. Guess what, he never called!!! I talked to a couple of farmers from the North end of the county, they said they were having chemicals stolen from their farms, they corner the suspect, called the S.O. they told them they were busy, get a tag number and they would get back to them on Monday. If Richard doesn't have time for his citizens, how does he exept to get re-elected.

I understand that folks have issues. I didn't start this thread to moan and groan about the election, or to figure out why things happened the way they did. Most everyone has some ideas, but only the individual voters can answer those questions. If you're one of those voters, there you have it.

I started this thread because I felt someone should pay homage to what he has accomplished over 21 years. He's done a lot of great things, and it needs to be noticed.

I hope that future Sheriff's of Brooks look forward and build on what he left them.

Tell me when this thread is updated:
