Effective January 3Rd sweepstakes are supposed to close. Do you think that will happen and if they don't will our illustrious sheriffs department enforce the ban?

I only know of two places staying open around Burke or Caldwell and both of them said gone to pre reveal. Every other place I play at is closing for several days. None I go to in hickory staying open.

Good thing they're closing, they were really cutting into North Carolina's lottery money.

Pre reveal or not, they are banned unless the courts decide otherwise. It's still gambling. Most players are covering the pre reveal up with a piece of paper. The State has no business telling us we can't play sweepstakes but it's ok to play the lottery. I don't see any difference in the two.

Our Sheriffs Dept is too busy hiding shade and looking for new "members" to worry about the law. Closing these places only mean that someone at the top hates to see poor people try and get ahead in this economy. So, why wasn't Bingo parlors closed?

Did Lenoir Biz Center shut down? The one near Family Dollar? I used to like going there.

Big Bucks creeps me out -- dark and dingy and smells of smoke.

The state is eliminating the competition to the lottery pure and simple. Don't gamble myself but it seems like the competition is being eliminated.

They weren't given "special treatment". ALL of these rackets have to be closed by a certain date. I think each county is spelling-out the requirements of when the places need to be closed. Some are just closing early.
The way I understand it, if the places can change the format to be in full compliance, they will re-open.
Since most of them are just fronting - it might be hard for them to comply, not sure.

one i am sitting in front of now using their wireless was made to close last week by sheriff and one close to my house opened yesterday and deputies came and made them close too.i dont think either one of them wanted to close early, the county made them..i know both owners well and both said they already switched systems and did comply but sheriffs dept told them no until judge says ok..which still makes me ask why hwy 18 is open..they all have same games..maybe hwy 18 is just bucking the system, still not right

Here is what sweeptopia has to say about it.

IS THIS GAMBLING?

While we can’t give legal advise specific to you or the state you reside in, and laws are changing all of the time, we don’t believe sweepstakes constitute gambling because it does not meet the 3-prong test for gambling:

Prize
Chance
Consideration (payment)
You are selling a product or service of your choosing (such as Internet Access or telephone cards). The customer received free sweepstakes reveals for their purchase through you. The customer can then utilize the software and systems that you provide them to reveal their sweepstakes entries and see whether they have won. This is similar to the Monopoly Game from McDonalds where you get entries with each purchase. As with all legal questions the ONLY way to determine the restrictions of any business is to check with your local city, county and state authorities. If there is a limitation please don’t hesitate to share this information with us as we are willing to work with you.

Now I call BS on this one. I say those 3 things do exsist.

Another question. If this is not gambling then why do I have to report my winnings to the IRS?

You don't have to report winnings less than $600.00. It's the same with the lottery. Your winnings can be offset by your losses. Why do you think you can get a printout from Harrah's that lists your losses? It is gambling in the same sense that the NC lottery, Harrah's, McDonalds games or anything you take a change on to win something. I get mail all the time from car dealerships wanting me to come by and check the scratch off ticket they sent me in the mail to see if I've won money, a gift card or a car. Same thing. Most people play sweepstakes because they enjoy it. Not to make a living. Trust me, professional gamblers are at the casinos. Caldwell County can hardly be mistaken for Vegas. The idea that sweepstakes parlors prey on the poor is bullshit. The so called poor spend more on alcohol and drugs than sweepstakes. Our wonderful State needs to worry more about controlling the free aid that is being handed out to all the illegals instead of shutting down businesses that are providing jobs. Obviously the State had rather distribute food stamps than let sweepstakes provide employment.

Every sweepstakes location that closed and has cooperated with the local law enforcement should be the only establishments allowed to reopen.....and they should be allowed to reopen.
The operators pay taxes on their earnings as they receive 1099 statements from the game distributors....they pay over inflated fees to the cities to operate, they employee people.....rent buildings that would otherwise be vaccant, spend money in the local economy and provide social interaction for many people. How is this a bad thing?
I'll gamble here and bet that within a year the State of NC will have an Internet sweepstakes that they run through the state lottery.....just wait and see.....
People.....voice your opinion to your state representatives, local county officials.....if a right to do something can be taken away so easily......imagine what is next!
Don't allow these businesses to be banned as yours could easily be next.
