so my parents and I are sitting on our front porch talking, and all the sudden there is the sound of a massive explosion in the distance. Did anyone else hear that, or know what it was?

It was a good distance away and sounded to be east of where I am.

I live in Lower Creek near the 321 side and heard the same thing. It sounded like an electric transformer but didn't notice any power outages, it may have been louder than that but I was in the car driving at the time with the window down near my house, I was on Seehorn St when I heard it.

Interesting thing is I was listening to a radio station a few weeks ago out of Greenville SC and they were asking people to call in that have heard loud explainable explosions lately. They claim that the area around Greenville is hearing them regularly, some people as far away as Asheville were calling in saying the same thing.

I thought about a sonic boom but it wasn't as crisp as a sonic boom, I've heard several before. It was more of a muffled sound almost as if underground. I didn't hear any fire trucks or sirens and I listened for a while. Again could have just been an electrical explosion but it's something to ponder.

We were eating dinner with our windows open and heard it, too! We're in the Lower Creek area. No idea what it was, and never heard any sirens after.

I experienced a series of these booms around my neighborhood summer 3 years ago one went off about 50 yards in front of me as i was standing talking to a neighbor. I was looking right at where it went off and saw nothing. I am sure there is a natural but heretofor unknown reason for these, maybe something to do with air pressure changes???
I remeber a series of these all across the south in and around 1973=75 or so
On the lighter side it could be just a bunch of cowboys sitting around the campfire eating beans.

Heard the same thing at my place today on the lower end of the county. Can't say I have heard a boom like that before, even when the Broyhill plant blew up back in the mid 90's.

Actually after doing some searches on Google I found many forums and articles from around the US and the world about strange booms that happened yesterday evening. The area of Fairfax Va had the same thing happen at approx the same time, someone from Ayden NC reported on that thread that it shook their home at the same time. I checked the USGS earthquake map and couldn't find any activity anywhere in the south for several days, at least not of magnitude 2.5 or better, that's the lowest it will let you search.

I heard an explosion today and felt it in the floor. I'm out near the rodeo in Granite and it sounded like it came from the north. I'm told there's a quarry out that way.

I was at the end of crump Rd working on a house and heard a loud explosion north towards 18. Heard sirens like 1 minute afterwards. It was a deep sound but didn't see smoke

Alan popped his butt cherry long ago. I think BJ probably rolled out of the bed when Jones told him he may lose his job soon and caused a minor earthquake.
