Wild Bill was one of the car painters that cruised town in cars he painted. I don't remember the van specifically. I do remember a garage where Rite Aid is now that you mention it. D&I Auto Parts uptown too was a hangout and they had a garage or something in the basement part.
Yeah D&I is where my gang usually hung out..with ol' Robert,Carol and rest of them boys.

Anyone remember Barton who owned Friendly Billiards, he had that Black Vega that looked like a mini Camaro? That thing ran like a scalded dog!

I remember leaving my leather jacket there with a quarter bag in it...was scared to death to go back and get it, thought the law would be waiting on me...was very surprised to find it still there and my weed still in the inside pocket!

Oh yeah ---- Bart of Friendly Billiards. Fun, fun, fun place to be. There was quite a bit of fun to be had at Friendly's beyond pool I can tell you that. LOL! It was the 80s and it was all good!! Sinister people had some sense back then and some respect for other people.

Who was the nice black man that worked for/with Bart for so long up there - he was a character??

I also remember Houston the car painter from Valmead.
I didn't know his last name though - was it Holsclaw?

This trip down memory lane has been a great deal of fun and when I think back I had most of this fun between the ages of 17 and 22 ---- have I had fun since then or did real life take over?? LOL!!

I use to hang out some at Friendly Billiards with my friends when I was in high school. We weren't into pot just shooting pool but if we minded our business we were never hassled. Saw some serious cash going back and forth across those tables though.

Oh man, what memories! Anybody remember the drink "Suicide" that could be ordered at the Big Rebel? I loved that drink!

D&I Auto Parts - used to date one of the Patrick boys who worked there.

My Mom had a 1969 Red Camaro SS that was my cruisin' ride. We had two places we were forbidden to go: Big Rebel and Red Pig. Shhh, don't let Mom know I mentioned the Suicide drink. And who remembers the huge dip in the parking lot at the Red Pig? LOL!

I remember once my boyfriend (now husband) got a ticket sitting in front of Roses for his glasspac's rattle'in the windows of the store in his 1969 "souped up" Chevelle SS!

Ah yes, those were the days! Thanks for the memories!

Mid-80's cruse 'in was THE BOMB -- Lenoir Mall - Sonic -- The Square - and Burger King ( BK LOUNGE)
Until the business got tired of people useing the parking lots - Then about 1991 the Lenoir City council outlawed crusing.-- Fast forward about 5 years - and Ghost Town east was in Caldwell County - Lenoir almost totally died.-- Then they hired lots of high paid consultants to save the city - And what did they do , BROUGHT BACK CRUSING TEN FOLD , car shows and the whole nine yards.-- Lesson to Lenoir businesses , would you rather pick up a few empty drink cans on Monday morning OR just lock the doors on your business?-- Lenoir would be wise to remember this lesson !!

While I was too young to join in, my friend lived where Friendly's is now and we would sit on her stoop and watch the stream of Cameros, Novas, GTOs, Cudas.....1973 and 1974. I was 8 or 9 and I fell in love with cameros. I finally got a 79 in 1989. Big black Berlinetta. I remember my grandparents complaining about the cruisers, but I loved it. We lived behind the old Spur station off Harper and you could never pull out of our street on Friday and Saturday nights.

Was just thinking about the days when you could cruise around uptown...wish they would let ppl start doing it again, I think it would give the kids here something better to do on the weekends than hang around Walmart! I had so many good times up there on the square man those were the days.

I havent saw that sign but I heard the rumor too, a few months back that he was reopening. Apparently he tried to sell the building to the city pool guys and they werent interested so he wanted to reopen.

Thats all I heard tho and havent noticed much progress to that effect. I wish they would reopen tho!!

Someone mentioned Paul...he was the racker when I was going there and he was super sweet guy. I heard too that he has passed away....idk if I should be typing that, in case it is a rumor, but .....there ya have it. I hope that doesnt bring me any bad heeby jeebies!!

Oh yes, crusin in the late 70's wwas he best. I was just like the song.."had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own". 71 Malibu, gold, 10 in wide rallys and Remington XT-120s all the way around. Car set up as high as you could get it back then. Me and my friends would cruise around the bowling alley, back by McDonalds, and then up to the Sonic.
I saw somebody mentioned the Big Rebel. First job I ever had was a curb hop at the Big Rebel in about 1975 or 1976. Paid $1.00 per hour (lol) but the tips were great and I often got 10 times my pay in tips. I remember many Saturday nights carrying out trays full of just drinks only to watch the customers pour out half the drink in a cup as soon as I handed it to them. As a know-nothing kid, I wondered why they did that.
When I was 16, I could get a carton of cigarettes and a half tank of gas for $10.00. My how times have changed. Don't smoke anymore and $10.00 won't get you 3 gallons of gas. That would not have lasted an hour in the Malibu....

They cut it all out sometime in the mid 90s. In my day we used to go from that side street that cuts behind the new fire dept come down harper through smiths crossroads and turn around at the servco. Everyone would either park at Taco Bell and hang out on the little hill overlooking smith cross roads or hang out a Burger King. That eventually became a problem. Had some of the 'BEST' times on that patch of road.

I'm getting too old!
From the Rec. Center by the Big Rebel drive in down to the Bowling Alley and back over and over.
Some weekends I went to Taylorsville to go around the supermarket and a restaurant on the other end of town. Setup a Drag Race on the way back to Lenoir on a straight stretch of highway 90.
