I guess the big question Sawmills should be asking is... do they really want to be partly liable for CCSO in their town limits because they will be. If they had a police force would they hire Jones and BJ to run it? That's basically what they will be getting.

CCSO has a wonderful record of solving murders in their town and surrounding area, I mean who could forget the awesome job they did on the Anderson murder and remember Jones said he wouldn't change a thing.

Sawmills just save your money and pay Griffiths Security to patrol the area or wait until next years election to see what happens. One good Jones lawsuit could shut your whole town down.

Here is my problem with it.. All these former "neighborhoods" like Sawmills,Cajahs Mtn, Gamewell decided years back they wanted to be incorporated, self governing towns, as well as a way to avoid annexation of larger towns. They receive state, local and federal funding for nice town halls and nice walking parks but once they felt the need to be "a town" they should be required to provide basic services including their own law enforcement. I would imagine these "towns" bank accounts are much stronger than people realize. If Lenoir, Hudson and Granite must pay their way then so should the smaller towns. It is not the responsibility of the country to increase free patrols or build substations to accommodate these cities needs. As well, if call volume is that strong in Sawmills , you have bigger issues than increasing patrols a few times per day will resolve.

Sawmills is the 2nd largest and most populated town in Caldwell County, first of course being Lenoir. Hudson just has more business so it is always thought of as being bigger.

I don't blame the outlying communities for avoiding annexation, however Sawmills has much "poverty housing" ie trailer parks out the wazoo. These places often have a high substance abuse rate and crime rate, populated by in large by transient type people. They could keep a drug squad busy just on Baker circle.

Interesting fact but population based i can see where Hudson would be smaller..Pike is correct, Sawmills does have strong problems in a few isolated areas. However, if one can afford new fire trucks, new addition to fire department and new city hall surely they can squeeze a little deeper to fund their on police. The problem is see with contracting county services is the fact it still utilizes county property and exposes the county to any liability without providing major benefits to the county in return. The few dollars paid to the county I suspect is a break-even proposition at best,

Once again people are speaking opinions without knowing facts, all the facts. Who is behind all this and why? Politics and power can be shocking and surprising. Read between the lines wisely.

Where is the new city hall?
The fire department is independent of and not part of the town.

is this site not for opinions? i thought any one and everyone could state their opinion on here. i agree , if the smaller cities have to pay for their own police so should Sawmills.

Yes the fire dept is "independent" but still supported by state, federal and local funding.. Sorry to inform you but "ham day" don't raise enough funds to operate the department. If these places want to be a town that's fine but they should provide their own services.

Sawmills never built a new town hall and provides all the same services that the other towns do with the exception of police. Sawmills provides their residence with water/sewer/trash pickup/curbside recycling/streets/public works/planning/two parks/recreational activities and much more. The fire department is separate from the Town. Town Hall has no say over them and they get to levy a tax rate of their own.

Citizens have a duty to get more involved in their local government. Start going to Council meetings or talk to your elected officials. They want to hear from you.

Sawmills wanted to be a town to keep from being annexed by either Hudson or Granite Falls I can't remember which one it was. Both of these towns have their own police department and if they had annexed Sawmills they would have had to provide whatever areas they took in with services and the remainder would still have been served by the county. I don't know why they would think that they should be provided with free police protection. As it has been already noted they have a lot of problem areas in their town and I honestly don't think they can provide the services cheaper than what it is costing them now. I say this because they aren't just going to be able to hire a couple of policemen and let them rotate shifts and use the same car. They are going to need a detective and a narcotics division to properly police the areas that lie within their boundaries. The town created the situation that they are facing now and should have already had a plan in place years ago.

The state has different forms of towns and to incorporate a town basically has to provide either garbage and some sewer (sanitation district) like Gamewell or provide police that's it. Its obviously much cheaper to provide garbage pick up and why provide police when that's what the Sheriffs Office is for. The problem would be resolved if the Sheriff would hire enough officers to cover the county in the first place. How do you expect to police a county with the same amount of officers you had on the road 30 years ago. The budget has obviously increased since then so why are there no more officers out there.
