My question: WHY did the County not purchase the Broyhill building and move there? Needed more room? It seems larger than the old building they were in behind the theatre on Hwy 18. Better yet, couldn't the Broyhills have donated this building to this pitiful county as a parting of ways gift? May have saved a few dollars.

Furniture Brand Inc. would never donate that building... they are greedy and want way too much money for it.

No one will ever buy it. I keep forgetting to look up how much they want for it. This building resembles The Kennedy Center Bldg in Washingyon, DC. Sad how these furniture giants have turned their backs on Caldwell County instead of giving back here. You look at so many towns whose conglomerates give back and help their community, how great they have it. Then you look at Caldwell County, and it is a joke. instead of making the town a mega center of furniture known around the world, its a town of empty factories and broken down buildings. If I were CEO of one of these giants, I'd make certain to take care of my home town but I guess when you have their kind of money, you lose your ability to care about the ones who helped you get to where you are today. May we never become that greedy in this lifetime. What a shame they couldn't help the county that made them rich.

That might be the case mo if it were not for the fact Broyhill Furniture is owned by Furniture Brands International. FBI is a holding company that owns many different companies and they are here to purely make money, the dont even have a clue of how furniture is made.

You keep thinking that they should care but they have not one single tie to this area other than they have a few empty buildings here, they have probably never even heard the name Lenoir or Caldwell County, its a number in a computer in a huge corporate machine.

I think you and others still seem to think the Broyhill family has some tie to the company but they dont. They sold controlling interest in the company years ago then sold it all off including the rights to their name.

But who sold to Furniture Brands? I guess if the larger giants do not care, the rest below them should do the same.

I guess the people of Caldwell should he proud, Google is having their Christmas Party on The Endeavor. Were we invited ?

Well it was their company to sell and they are not responsible for what happens after they sell it. They were in business to make money you know. I mean furniture was like anything else, because of our trade policies it was going to leave either way. You can't really blame the Broyhills for selling out and after all they employed people in this county for one hundred years and made Lenoir what it was, it's more the fault of the people and the city for being so short sighted and not being more diverse, being more educated and planning ahead.

Why didn't the county hold off building a new building and obtain this building? Seems to be larger than what they did build. Or acquire the empty mall/Dr offices ?

Better yet, as 1 MAN stood up and asked the county one night at a meeting: why not just buy all the plywood you can get your hands on and build a wall on both sides of Hwy 321 from the Hickory Bridge to Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock....go ahead and keep companies and businesses out. Make this once thriving area a complete ghost town and substitute the name retirement city for ghost town. That man is now banned from all future meetings with the county for that remark. I wonder how many years this building will sit empty because no one will come here to start a business? Is must be just naive to think the once giants who still have homes here would help a struggling community get back on its feet. Afterall, your hands are tied and you can't help do anything since selling out. All the excuse makers, forgive us for thinking that rather than buying more land, erecting a new facility is cheaper than using a building that is already built. Sewer lines in place, paving, brick, electricity. Every 14 years a newer building should be built to accomodate all the welfare seekers of this town and taxes should continue to go up for the poor to visit. The web giants should continue to come here to with a tax break for 20 years. We should just sit back and say nothing because we live in the greatest retirement cities around. No one should give back to their communities after all, they no longer own anything here. Our number one priority is to make sure that county jobs go overseas and unemployment climb. Say unemployment is down? The numbers do not show the unemployed whose benefits exhausted. Only those receiving benefits under unemployment.

I could not agree with you more. Tax breaks and nepotism are the biggest reasons we have no ability to make Lenoir a better place to live and WORK. I have lived here and worked here until 2 years ago. I worked and put myself through undergraduate school and have been a volunteer in my hometown for 20 years in many areas. I used to walk down our streets with a smile and a sense of pride, our church community would pool resources together to also help and focus on the good of the community. Our forefathers who came to our fair town came here for monetary gain and did so with the hard labor of both adults and children however it is gone and forgotton as far as some moguls. I would love to see the building made into one of the largest science centers and education areas in NC. Its location is perfect even for our children to visit during school hours. Lots of states share their exhibits and more. It took years to get a small college and I remember the McDonalds was a challenge as well however it came and maybe just maybe we will find someone who thinks with their heart and not with their pocketbook.

Well put. I think the well out giants could afford to buy it back, but heaven forbid they spend a dime when our over eager commissioners will gladly spend our tax dollars to do so....bet they wouldnt even approach the seller for a reduced amount or tax write off...after all, this thriving community of wealthy people can afford it.

This county is a poster child for deindustrialization and outsourcing. Until these policies are stopped and addressed on a national level I do not want to hear talk of more sacrifice or the fiscal cliff. By the way billions in foreign aid is a joke while we have many of our people dying of neglect and poverty.

For those who still cry about putting county workers in the mall- just why do you continue to want to buy that outdated, leaking, no central heat flood plain white elephant?????
It is likely serving its best purpose as a partially used medical outpost for the hospital.
The old dss building was paid for in rent multiple times over to Bernhardt, it was so diseased with Black Mold it had to be torn down.
Bernhardt would not cooperate on a reasonable rate extension.Anyway good riddance to a leaky mold ridden health trap.

A Science Center would be wonderful. It could go hand in hand with technology. It's something realistic and positive.

great idea! then everyone could be complaining about the flooding
and how much was paid for the site.

Realistically, what's done is done.

Too late, property has been sold to a small pharmacy related business to be used as office and warehouse space with hopes at some point to be noticed by one of the larger drug makers . I do believe however the old Patterson school is being repurposed as a science center and other unique programs for the school system

That would be a great idea. Keep the Historical Patterson site maintained and put new life into the surroundings. It makes you scratch your head how much history the county is sitting on and no one capitilizes on what's here for the taking. Virginia is full of theater reinactments, reproduction shops of candles, clothing, gift shops and the like. Yet here we sit oblivious to our surroundings and the opportunities that await. Such as Laura Foster and Tom Dula (Dooley) and the modern day soap opera behind their past. The history of Chapel of Rest, and all the civil war hero graves that cover the mountain hills. There's stories there if people will look into them. I do not condone the fiddler's convention due to the T-bird clientele it attracts, but if given better sponsor and leadership this could be a positive event for our county instead of another black eye and drug festival free for all. I do hope Patterson school is put to good use. Is this information for certain? Is someone considering restoration of this beautiful site?

Wouldn't it be great if county officials tried to recruit other businesses to come here? Meaning a "manufacturing" company not an IT company. Look what Texas is doing, how many companies have moved there because of "business friendly" regulations? All the empty buildings around here and it's just sad to watch them deteriorate and become safety hazards and eyesores.
