Don't you worry yourself.Lenoir is what it is,a group of people turning more and more to drugs and alcohol as job opportunities become scarcer and scarcer. The people aren't really idiots, many of them have simply given up, mirroring the fate of America in a microcosm. Finally, I've given up as well, I suppose. In reality, before it's all over, many of us in America will have reached the end of the road. too bad, the jackals are surrounding us all.

Good analogy.. Many are giving up, even as other regions begin to overcome the economic downturn, we continue our decline. No hope of substantial new jobs are on the horizon and the jobs which do exist are paying less and less. The employment in this area is service based heavily but an area can only survive so long like that. To thrive, an area must manufacture. A good example is the local restaurants, I walked into a once busy place today at lunch and only 4 people there. Owner said only Thursday/Friday lunches busy now, which is payday for many. Service based/related businesses here are in trouble now, because no one has money to freely spend. I'm not sure what the answer is, but we need to find it soon.. I am not sure handing out EDC funds to new businesses will get us there, we need a re-imaging/ rebranding of the area. How does that happen?? I am not sure, but furniture is not the answer. If we wait on that industry to save us, well we will be a ghost town first.

that's funny! moving requires money for a deposit on another place to live, the cost of moving your stuff to the new place,
deposits for lights, water, and so on if you leave far enough that you don't have the same electric company and all.

It'd take about $2,000 to do so.

People around here don't have many jobs to choose from as it is-burger flipping barely keeps the rent paid for most.

So, with things being as tight as they are for most around here, exactly how do you propose for them to leave?

You raise a valid question. The equipment and machinery is often a decade old or more which leaves it lacking in technology and not practical for use. The buildings are an issue even more complicated. To be repurposed the building will be required to meet current building and safety codes, which often cost more than building a new location. I read the EDC has set aside funds to assist with demo of buildings if a new co wants to rebuild, but how long do we allow these large structures sit vacant and deteriorate turning into unsightly blights on the area before we remove them. What we don't want is this area looking like Detroit with over grown vacant buildings everywhere. Where is the balance point between vacant buildings being an asset vs being a liability?

You must be living with friends or family or on the streets. You also must have had no home to begin with that was full of furniture and personal items. It is not possible to move anywhere without paying to have your things moved, utilities transferred or connected, a deposit and first and last months rent.

If you can move with nothing then you had nothing to begin with.

Really? Seriously? It isn't possible to put your stuff on a trailer and drive it to your new place without paying someone else to do it for you?

It's BS attitudes like this that causes half of everyone's money problems.

Mandrake,

If you hate Lenoir so much why do you get on the Topix.

Nope my stuff is in storage in Lenoir. I'm living in my RV that I bought after moving and work at the RV park in exchange for all inclusive rent. As for furniture I got an apartment full of furniture for free by helping the apartment complex clean out an abandoned apartment.

So what you're saying is that your situation in no way at all compares to a typical family from Caldwell county.

I'm 50, I have a large home full of furniture with some land along with out buildings with all of my lawn equipment, my tools and work shop etc, etc. Oh how easy it would be for me to just throw my stuff in a storage unit and go grab some discarded furniture and live in my camper! I have a camper too by the way.

I could have easily picked up and moved with virtually nothing in my pocket in my early 20's when I had virtually nothing. But to ridicule others and say how easy it is for someone to just pick up and move is irresponsible and clueless. It would cost me many thousands to have a moving company move to the beach like you.

Then on top of that I have the home and property I walked away from to attend to. There is the real estate sale that needs to take place. Then, while it doesn't sell since there aren't buyers for a large home like mine, I will have to continue to pay for upkeep, taxes, etc. All the while I'm living this new stress free blissful life at the beach.

No thanks.

Caldwell county needs jobs that have a future for established residents and for future generations that will be living here.

I'm glad for you that you're happy and making a new way for yourself but stop and think before you ridicule others. Many who live here aren't in a financial position to just up and leave. We have our lives invested here and the financial enormity of leaving takes that option off the table.
