I think you are misunderstanding the reasoning for wanting to remodel the civic center. Its not because he isn't important to them. Did the city say that if they remodeled it, they wouldn't rename it after him again? Why should we be forced to have an event center no one wants to use because its old and needs updating? Change can be good!

I hope that when it's remodeled, it'll keep the same name. I am not from uvalde, but when I visit,I am proud when I see Willie DeLeon's name there. I did not know him either but I am proud.

Hell no they better not rename it.He was a war hero abd uvalde can not go back on their word to honor Mr Deleon. He was willing to sacifice his life to us free and he did not go back his word to defend the constitution of this great nation of ours .That would really be chicken chick of uvalde to do that .Hopefully not .God bless you MR.DELEON & R.I.P.

Thank you to all who are Honoring and remembering my Grandfather. My family and I are very honored and pleased with what our Grandpa did. There is stuff written about him, there was an article written a good time back you can probably get it at the Library. Yea they are wanting to remodel the Civic Center, but we hope that doesn't mean losing the Name. Very PROUD to be a DE LEON.

I salute Mr. Deleon. Does anyone know of other decorated soldiers who fought in combat during the Vietnam war or before that are natives from Uvalde, Texas.

Throughout history, our hispanic young men and now women, have put their lives on the line for this great country,as Americans. i say hispanic because we have been labeled as such, and really,it doesn't bother me one bit. I live in the area and our soldiers defend all of us regardless of where we live. It would be great if someone would research on the Uvalde soldiers. During the Viet Nam war,the town of Crystal City lost at least 11 of their young men. Statistically,it was one of the cities losing more young lives, according to population. I remember at one Memorial Day, a veteran stated that they had proudly served and if called to do it again, they would gladly serve once more.Martin Luther King was right when he said that we had lost our Great Society in the battlefields of Viet Nam.
I go to Uvalde often and it makes me very proud to read the name of Willie DeLeon. War heroes always leave their mark. I salute Willie DeLeon.

what more decoration would you want for a veteran than giving their life in the defense of our country. ARNOLDO JASS CARDENAS AND FRANCISCO CRUZ ARANDA DID JUST THAT WHILE SERVING IN THAT FORSAKEN WAR - VIETNAM. WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE THAT IS GIVEN FORTH, AND MY RESPECTS FOR SGT. WILLIE DE LEON. R.I.P.

My Grandpa was a Decorated WAR HERO!!! And a well know masonary (brick layer) here in Uvalde. He didn't talk too much to us about his time serving our Country but the way he carried himself and others respected him and gave him praise. That was all we needed to see to know that he was respected and did his all. And that made us a strong backboned family. There are so many men and now women that do the same that my Grandpa did and they should be looked up to and honored for their services. Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers!!!

I am very proud that the civic center was named after Mr. Deleon. I grew up in his neighborhood and I still remember him. He was very kind, gentle and warm hearted person. His grandsons use to call him Lito.... Mr. Deleon displayed on top of his fireplace a picture of his son who died in World War I or II as well as his purple heart. He was blessed in many ways, he had a wonderful wife named Paula, had children and was able to see his grandchildren grow up. I am glad that his name lives on.

don't embellish, how can mr. de leon have a picture of his son who died in world I or II, perhaps its the other way around given the fact that Sgt. de leon served in vietnam? this would make him very ancient when he was serving in nam?
