Take back our Library

Last year Linda Romano told New Hartford she needed a million dollars a year or the library and as recently April this year states that:“We are in tough times now and I think that tough measures are called for."

Yet, when she pushed through the $16,000 parting gift to Hans Plembeck she could be heard agreeing that the money is not in the budget and that it is against Library policy. What gives? How can the library be in such dire straights that she will give away thousands of dollars she admits the library doesn't have? Is that responsible? Is this the kind of person we should entrust hundreds of thousands of taxpayer money to?

A Utica OD article dated April 17th of this year includes an interesting quote. The quote is the last sentence of the article and appears to relate to the financial situation and fundraising activities for the Library:

“We are in tough times now and I think that tough measures are called for,” Romano said.

On October 31, 2011. Then director Hans Plembeck emailed Library President Linda Romano and bragged on how he was using the Library's own video securty system to spy on library patrons in order to see what they were reading. This is the same Hans Plembeck who after he retired was given a $16,000 cash payment as a retirement gift, courtesy of New Hartford taxpayers? Why? Is this the kind of job performance Romano is paying him back for? Spying on library patrons?

This is unbelievable! The trustees gave $16,000 in cash to Hans Plembeck after he admits that he was spying library patrons? The Trustees should have fired him, not given a huge cash gift! What were our trustees thinking?

As a frequent user of the library, I am so glad that Trustees Ed Flemma and Ed Wiatr are fighting to protect the library from finacial ruin. Thanks to them, we may yet be able to keep our library! Thank you gentleman

The Friends of te New Hartford Public Library support Mr Waitr and Mr. Flemma. By courageously voting against this wasteful spending, they are doing their best to protect the library and its funding. They have shown that they are true friends of our library. Thank you and don't let the naysayers get you down.

What happens when another long time employee retires? They will ask for their grab bag of cash too when they head out the door. This will cost the library a lot more then just $16,000 when its all said and done. Perhaps we should identify these older, long time employees now. I know Mr Plembeck's library career is going to get a close look.

The New Hartford Town Budget collects revenues of approximately $31,000,000.$16,000 is is .0005% of the Town budget. The population of the Town is 22,000.$16,000 costs each resident 73 cents or 15 cents per year for 5 years. That's how I define minor. The $16,000 is not coming out of your pocket only.
Missing The Point

im, you are totally missing the point. It's not just the $16000 it's the fact that the library does not have the money, they are already working in the red, this was against current policy, this sets a policy for future directors without even changing the current policy, the NH library is not 30 years old so there is no way he worked for the library for 30 years, he did not expect it so it was not a necessary expense.

I do not care if it is 15 cents or 15 dollars the point is that it was not an expense that was instrumental to keeping the library doors open. If I have to stay in a budget for my family I certainly expect that the trustees of the library should keep a better handle on their own fiscal responsibilities. If they do not know how to do that, then they should resign. I am sick of people giving my hard earned money away just because they want to be nice. Some decisions are hard and as trustees they have to make them based on what is best for the library and the residents of New Hartford who pay for it.

One interesting tidbit about the history of the library was that it was built with taxpayer dollars in grants from NY State, the federal government as well the Town of New Hartford. Accordingly to and OD article written when ground was broke on the new library building the library was supposed to be turned over to the town when it was completed. That never happened and to this day no one knows who actually owns the NH "public" library!
