Who owns the building of my beloved old school....I hear it was a high school before it was an elementary school? Is this true?

Would it not be cool if it became the site of a new charter high school...Show the school board how to REALLY run a school.

I don't know who owns it now. But I drive by it on occasion and reminisce. I'm in for the charter school idea. Man, I really loved that school.

It will be just another lost piece of history in Utica, eventually they will just knock it down, because it would cost more to renovate it, an arab guy bought it and put that fence up years ago before returning to his homeland and leaving the building in limbo.

It was bought by some foreign arab who converted it and then apparently abandoned it.

Again, what a shame. I always thought of so many things that could have been done to the building to improve the neighborhood.

Roosevelt school should be torn down.Even the school district did not want it for 1 dollar. So you who wants to know more about the school--go back from where you came from and learn about the past before you make ridiculous comments.Moron

The City of Utica owns Roosevelt.

It is an albatross around its neck. Water was running in the cellar and there was about 6 feet of water before it was shut off.

The library floor collapsed because the diplomat from Qtar put some of those huge metal gates I there.

A couple of years ago the fire department had a training there and collapsed the floors on the north side of the building because the water damage from the roof was so great the gym floor looked like Oneida Lake in a wind storm.

The estimate to tear it down is about $2.5 million. You are looking at $5 -$10 million to renovate it due to the asbestos and lead contamination.

In this economy I don’t see people lining up to invest that type of money

10,000 give 1,000 dollars, that would be enough for the renovations...

Wonder how much the city would sell it for....

someone should set up a donation website..

The point here is there are hundreds or great old buildings and houses that should be sold off cheap to someone willing to renovate them. The architecture of that building is irreplaceable. It would make excellent high end yuppie apartments bringing the neighborhood up and shouldn't be replaced by some cheap POS to be used for low income housing and keeping the neighborhood down.
Our government is the worst offender. Many extinct old mental hospitals and government buildings built in a time when architects actually had some artistic ability, are just rotting away when they can be sold and used for good and put back on the tax rolls. No wonder the USA is in a hole. The waste is unbelievable.

I've got to agree with you there. It will certainly cost quite a bit to renovate, but if it was, it would pay off in more ways down the road. Believe me, if I had the means, I would do it in a heartbeat!!!!

Roosevelt is owned by the city. It was purchased a long time ago by an Indian Prince or something like that. Well, they had intentions of fixing it up but eventually they couldn't afford it. So now I believe it is owned by the city. I agree, they should fix it up and split Proctor. However, the asbestos and everything else in there will take quite a pretty penny to clean up!

Sure is would be pricey to fix up, but would it cost less to knock it down and rebuild some prefab, ugly structure with a useful life of 10 years before it would need to be updated again? That's the way our government does things. Their pockets are deep with OUR money especially when they hire all their friends and relatives to do anything for the city.
The cost to knock it down would more than likely be around the same as the cost to remove any asbestos or other contaminants. Renovation from that point should cost less then rebuilding altogether.

Regardless, it is a shame to let it go. I can't remember who posted it earlier, but the architecture alone makes it worth it to at least try to save it.

All of you speak of how much you'd like to see it fixed, but have any of you been inside recently? I have. The building is wrecked, between nature and humans the place feels pretty hopeless.
