Those were both at Riverside right? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure. Maybe not because I don't recall Kaufmans ever beong at Riverside.

oops, you're correct, it was Riverside. Didn't pay attention to title which clearly states, in Big letters, Sangertown!! Bad me.

Its okay. They are kind of hard to remember since it was so long ago. I do wish the malls were like they once were.

Time Out and Park Place were awesome!!! There is now a facebook page for Sangertown Sqaure and they post old pictures of the mall every Friday. Brings back a lot of memories and will clear up a lot of the arguements on this topic.

yeah, it's a great page. that's the main reason I 'liked' it on facebook so I could see the vintage pictures. most of them lately have been from the late 90s though. still waiting to see some from back in the 80s.

Kaufmann's was never at Riverside. Steinbach was. I do remember Howlands but I think they were located at New Hartford Shopping Center - not Riverside.
howlands was at riverside when it opened. At some point it was renamed steinbach. There also was a howlands at nhsc

I have really enjoyed reading through all these posts. Such great memories of Sangertown Mall in its hey day. I can only recall Sangertown from about 1994 on (I was 11 then). I distinctly remember Arbys, Pizza Hut Express, Hemstroughts, Cinnabon, the one movie theater that did NOT have the roller skating rink, Bradlees, B Dalton and Walden Books, Tops n Bottoms, Bosco the talking parrot from the shoe store, the Pet Store, K B Toys, Kleins, Champs, The Wall (no one mentioned that one, used to be where FYE is now next to Sears), McDonalds, Taco Bell, Ruby Tuesdays, the 'pit'/depressed area with the steps that used to be down in the food court (which they filled in and put all those kiosks there now; maybe people were falling down its steps?), and the fountain that used to be right near it (I think there was a fountain right there??), and the Cyberstation arcade..
I lived in Texas from 1986-1994 before moving back to Utica in the summer of '94, so reading about all of the places that were in Sangertown during that time frame (Woolworths, O'tooles, Margaritas, Chuck E Cheese) is so funny! Oh well, even if I was living in Utica during those years, I wouldnt have remembered them anyways hahaha..well, at least the stuff from the 80s..I am a HUGE nostalgia nut, so this forum has been SO AWESOME to read through!! Well, minus some of the disagreements.
I really hope that they can breathe a little more life back in to Sangertown and bring it back up to what it was back in the 80s, 90s...I just don't want it to suffer the same fate as Riverside. For now, I'll take that we still have it, no matter how good or bad it is :) And I hope the area always has it.
I agree!

Kurt, I don't remember Lord & Taylor. It would be great to have one in Sangertown Mall now.

Right there on the corner. I think there was even a little window you could look into the rink with from the mall. I was little so maybe I don't remember it. They should put something fun like that back in there. Does anyone remember when ChuckeCheese was in the mall?
I worked at the skating Rink it was owned by an Indian couple. after numerous complaints from other mall tenants about the music. It was closed and remodeled to include the parkplace arcade and labellavista itallian restaurant. Well the crowds the rink once had never came back to full swing but us die hard skaters liked the better sound, lights and DJ Bill T. than what midstate offered. It was more intimate and we got our way musically. More dance/disco vs. top 40 rock. Well it closed and became the other 3 theaters where I saw movies like Ferris Bueller and The Body Guard.

The rink was in what is now the target wing- just before what's left of the foodcourt. As the poster said- it was open- so you could see people roller skating etc.

Later, that area became an extension of the movie theatre, a Pizza Hut, Cinnabon, Now it's the area from that crazy boutique to the first Chinese restaurant.
