I took karate from Larry at the Utica Karate Club when I was a kid. I thought the guy was insane...used to beat the crap out of students. Is he really gay? I would have never guessed that. Crazy.

Larry was not gay but his teaching style was a little questionable. I took Karate from him at his Bleeker Street Studio for 9 years up until the age of 16. I had more than a few injuries from punishments for a mistake in my stance or kata. Although I have to say that on the two occasions we did compete with other studios outside of our own, we were far superior. After nine years of hard work I left a brown belt, while I watched other clubs hand out black belts to students after 3 or 4 years. I sparred with one of those so called black belts at a tournament and beat him easily. I never ever saw Larry make a sexual advance towards any of my fellow students or myself and he genuinely believed his training style was the best. If you knew Larry, you also knew that you would want him on your side in a fight, and if he was on the other side, get out of town. Hope he is doing well.

I had the same experience as True. It was a traditional dojo, with strict rules and a split bamboo cane that you would be wacked with if your technique was bad. I brag about that now, especially when I see the lame results of other dojos'. Larry was a great guy and was never inappropriate. If anything, he was a bit too honest and open. I have nothing but good memories of my times there on Bleeker Street and the discipline that I developed that followed me my whole life.

I enjoyed the times I spent at Larry's dojo. It was a strict, hard style, traditional Japanese system. I still remember bowing to a picture of Master Funicoshi every class. I heard the rumors about Larry and possible child molestation but I never saw any signs of it. There were also rumors that he was not really a certified black belt but I never saw any signs of that either. Tough guy. The only reason I left that dojo was because I got tired of having to pull punches and not make contact and went to a more eclectic style that used protective gear. Of course, there were always a few bloody noses and bruised ribs. I hope he's doing well. You have to like a guy that loved to dance and drink Wild Turkey.
