Thought provoking article...but as usual biased, agenda driven, and no research done. Just some freak in a closet with a typewriter. Why not interview the fire departments? Why not get other opinions?

And the assertation that more manpower would be available in a merged department shows lack of subject knowledge. There is mutual aid in place now that is used when needed. Your ideological merged department would probably have less manpower when the current members all quit when you force their current departments closed. I'm not saying its right, but it is the cold hard facts.

Its easy to come up with grandiose ideas and write about them when you buy ink by the barrel. But until you have buy in from those fire departments, your crusade regarding consolidation is a waste of paper and time. Maybe next time include the departments in your article in some fashion and stop trying to set policy from that closet.

Consolidating is a good thing if done for the right reasons and having a desired outcome lined up and in place. Most of the time the rag OD insists on it without really investigating the overall picture. Tell me how much the savings for 911 dispatching now is? Haha. Utica, Rome, and NH all paid for there own centers. Now the county does it all and that line budget continues to grow exponentially. Where is the savings ?.....there is none. The previous mentioned municipalities took the dispatch money in their budgets and applied it elsewhere and now everyone's county taxes have been increased to pay for the consolidated center. Which by the way still is no better than a call center for mail order products in India. We've lost the qaulity of service and are all paying more!..... But hey! We consolidated like the paper of Utica loves!

How dumb. This area will continue to crumble while the politicans continue to pick us clean tax wise and the local paper continues to cheer it on.

Or in other words ... don't screw with us.

We want our own big shiny fire trucks and we don't want to share. So what if there is twice the equipment out there than what is needed. Keep paying suckers ...

One of their best articles....too much public safety overhead and union influence in this region still. Consolidate all of it and put the plan in place now so it can be managed by natural attrition rather than painful layoffs. We're half the size we used to be and these services all need to shrink too.
You a moron

There is no union in a volunteer FD. The people there do it for free stupid. And what painful layoffs? You're gonna layoff a volunteer? Wtf are you even talking about?

Yes. The above poster reminds us all why some people should not breed. If the trucks weren't shiny you'd bitch that things weren't being taken care of. And as far as sharing goes.... Why should one village buy a ladder and have another village just reap the benefits from it without any buy on themselves ? This all needs to be sorted out and people like this poster with the 6th grade pedigree need to stick to working the system for the free cheese line.

When they get with the 21st Century then the firemen's opinions will be worthy. When other cities are removing their stupid firehorns, the foundation savers in Oneida Co. are buying new ones!
