Remember The Screaming Eagles ?

I remember the screaming eagles...they were AWSOME!
Infact, I knew the founder and his wife.
It was years ago that I got to meet Mr. Harrison, I can't remember his first name.
He and his wife ended up being residents in the nursing home where I worked around 25 years ago.
Back then, he still kept in contact with the drill team, they were a large group of boys and girls in their teens, they were also very respectful and polite...and oh boy, these kids had awsome rhythm.
The founder, Mr. Harrison, invited the team into the nursing home to preform for the residents and staff. It was truly an awsome performance. I know that I'll not forget how much these kids loved and respected the man that cared for these kids enough to get the "drill team" started, get the kids off the streets and do something that they liked to do.
Good memories for sure.

<quoted text>I know what you mean LWB, I kind of felt the same way as you back then. Sounds crazy today, but they were a bit intimidating to a kid like me. Now I see it for what it really was; pride, talent, and precision. I just can't help but wonder how many were lost to Vietnam.
That "angry" look was exactly part of their appeal. Back in those days, we had the Beatles as fun-loving mop-tops and on the other side of that was James Brown who scared the bejezus out of all white older folks out there with his dance, grunts and screams. Truth be told, talent is talent and the Fabs had it, The Godfather of Soul had it and so did the Screaming Eagles. And not for nothing, back 40 years ago the blacks had a lot to be angry about anyway in those early days of civil unrest. Today, they can only blame themselves for their backslide into crack, meth, etc. How sad...

Where did they go?
They went to SF to join the Black Panthers, became heroin addicts, and bore many young'ns who are now crack addicts in Oakland.

Performed at Half-Time at a Pre-season Knicks vs. Celtics or Buffalo Braves Exhibition Game back in 1971 at the Aud. They were a Class Act.

I believe the drill team was lead by the late Mr. Joe Byrd. He was well liked and well respected by all in the community.

I remember them. They were GREAT! Definately the high point of any parade.
I agree, the highlight of the parade for me was when I was lucky enough to have them stop in front of us and so one of their routines.
Would love to see a group like that again.

Wow, I was in the Screaming Eagles Drill team that went to New York, for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1963. Joe Byrd was a great drill instructor. I had a great time in this organization, and appreciate the accolades.

We were the original "Stomp The Yard", I still remember the calls, "Drill Team, Drill Team, jive forward with the mambo!!" called out by Joe Bryd.

Thank-you all, the Screaming Eagles are always in my heart, just as Utica will always be home, even though I'm in Atlanta, bless you all. BT

Would be wonderful to see a team put together again! They were by far, the best part of Utica parades. Imagine how well they would do on some of the talent shows they have on TV? Do you stay in contact with any of the team? John Phoenix is still in the area, sadly his brother passed away several years ago, as did Mr. Byrd.
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

Thank-you so very much you have touched my heart.
I would love to see a reunion why not? John Phoenix and Carl were like family to me, my dad and their dad were in a musical trio together, that used to play in the ski resorts of the Adirondack Mountains, wow!! Snow Ridge, is it still open?

My brother graduated from Syracuse University, with an engineering degree "Go Orange".

The Screaming Eagles are a wonderful part of my life I will always remember. "Drill Team, Drill Team, at ease!" Rest in peace Joe Byrd and Carl Phoenix

Much respect to my friends in the New York State of mind. Happy Holidays to you all, enjoy stay safe.

Mr Phoenix was a wonderful man and and very talented musician! Yes, Snow Ridge is still open, but no snow here, lol. Parkway is still open too for skating and skiing. Remember Gary Garrett- used to skate with untied laces on his skates? LOL, I could barely stand on skates when the laces were tied!
