The Oriskany Fire Dept. is looking for a new club house funded by the taxpayers! The boys don't have enough room for their toys, so they're looking to the taxpayers to expand their current firehouse or buy them a brandnew one. The village mayor, who supports this taxpayer screwing, says there simply isn't enough room for all the fire trucks in the current clubhouse, and besides the fire dept. boys have yet another taxpayer funded truck on order. The mayor and his fire dept. friends have no intention of giving any consideration to a recent study that urges merging area fire departments. Instead, they plan to get the taxpayers to fund expansion of the OFD club. Look no further than the Oriskany Fire Dept. and village board when asking why property taxes are sky high.

The fellows in the Oriskany FD Do a good job with what they have to work with. Stop knocking them and go down and get an application to be part of a solution rather than a lot of hot air. Either you're just an ignorant fool or one of those other FD's looking to benefit from their demise with there tax dollars then going to your own empire. Either way scumbag....your still a scumbag.

I'm guessing you either have a membership in the club or have a family member who uses the taxpayer-funded club house. The toys the boys use are much newer than any you'd find in any city covering much greater populations and building density. Oriskany FD and most of the other FD's in the area have way to much equipment and have expenditures than necessary. The taxpayer takes it up the azz for the boys to have their clubs. Also, I have no interest in belonging to the club as you suggest. Spending Saturday mornings washing clubhouse firetrucks with one hand on a fire hose and the other hand on my hose doesn't look appealing.

I am a member of this 'club' and I have a few comments to make.

It is true that many volunteer fire companys have nicer equipment than most cities and this ie easily explained by what they spend on apparatus is far less than what is spent on personel if it were a paid agency. Most people do not know how much time, energy, personal sacrifics and their own money goes into 'volunteering'.

It is true that there is talk about adding to the fire station. But before you jump the gun, you need to realize that the addition to the station is not a club room where there is parties held or other social type events. It is infact an addition to house a new fire truck. The original station was built over 40 years ago when fire apparatus was smaller and alot less bulky. The current station is stuffed to over capacity with equipment. The fire service has changed drastically over 40 years, not only in techniques but also in the amount of eqipment they must carry and use. The original station was suppose to be larger but was scaled back to save funding back then. However, it is now time to properly house our equipment.
These men and women put in hrs of training, participate (if not run) many of the community events. Oriskany does not ask for elaborate equipment and only request items they need. In this case, the new fire truck is being purchased on a replacement program. It is this typ of forethought that keeps Oriskany's maintainence down and other issues. You treat your volunteers like you want to be treated. Any time you want to come down and see how crammed we are, feel free, there is usually a dedicated volunteer there doing many of the things outside of fighting fires that are behind the scenes stuff.

How can Oriskany justify having a new building. How many pump hour outside of training does your engine or arial have? Your fooling yourself. The fire service is changing. The majority of call are EMS. How many fires have happened in that village or in OFD's jurisdiction? Your all mutula aid or standby. Plus you guys got a water rescue team! Seriously I dont knock anyone for training but refresh my memory on how many call outs that teams had? Your a 16 street village. Your lucky you havent been disolved yet.

You must not have read or at don't agree with the recent report calling for consolidation of fire depts in Whitestown. Small fire depts, municipalities and school districts are driving the taxpayer into bankruptcy. These institutions are bloated relics or the past, kept alive by those who are parochial and inward thinking. That's the reason the country is going broke. I'll add that it was stupid for Oriskany and the Fire Dept. to accept pork money for a new fire truck if the current fire house isn't even big enough for the over abundance of vehicles you already have.

The idea of having volunteer fire depts is to reduce expense. There's no excuse for having a bunch of equipment a city couldn't afford and the village fire dept doesn't need. If older less expensive equipment is good enough for cities with trained professional fire depts it's good enough for the volunteer fire depts in small villages.

I'm guessing you dropped out of grade school and are on welfare. You probably went to one of those small schools that ought to be consolidated to save the taxpayer from going broke.
