Urban Planning in Utica

The Cornell Cooperative Extension just opened an "urban planning studio"
in Utica's City Hall. They will (I hope) begin working on some problems that have been neglected far too long, such as walkability, underperforming transit services, bike lanes, etc.

What do you think about trying to make Utica a higher quality place in this way? Is it just trimming around the edges or could it mean substantive change?

Personally I think all the new energy going into development is great, but there are some fundamentals of city planning that Utica just has not gotten right, and until it does all the economic development in the world won't fix the city.

@Ex Utican: This is 100% funded by Cornell University, so...

Also, what SHOULD we be spending money on, more tax breaks for new big box stores and fast food joints?

One of our biggest problems is our fear of change. All the planning in the world will not help if the people of Utica stand in the way of progress. I think it's a great idea to get new ideas from outside sources. What we need to do is get more people involved who are not politically connected. People who's only goal is to see the city move forward and not profit financially from it. People will be willing to help if they believe they can really make a difference. Politicians in Utica stifle progress because they all want to claim credit for everything. Ronald Reagan once said "great things can be accomplished if you don't care who gets the credit".

Until the region wants and accepts change it doesn't matter. They really need to realize that what's going on there now isn't working.

I agree. Personally I think it's too little too late. Look at the political landscape of the whole country. I really do not want to be negative I just think change will come when the bottom falls out and the other shoe drops. Then you will see big changes fast. I do hope I am wrong.

You're not wrong. The Utica region is like an addict who has been enabled and abused. Until it hits rock bottom there will be no change.

Look at the Stewart's mess in E Utica. I'm sure Cornell Cooperative Extension woukd have a LOT to say about the spread of convenience store blight in what is now a residentially zoned location.

We already hit rock botton!!!!

Look at the crime rate - it rises every day. There are no businesses in Utica left that can pay a liveable salary large enough to support a family on. No one dares to walk on any street at night any place in Utica without the fear of being mugged. The list can go on and on and on.........

Once this City became a dumping ground for refugees, sex offenders, and the criminals doing time in our local prison and bringing all their relatives and friend with them, this City is doomed. Combine all this with our local greedy and unqualified local politicans, this City is like a ship that has sunk.
