The longer you keep them off the streets, the less chance of drug use, fighting, crime, truancy and pregnancy

they should have let everyone know it was voluntary at the time of the press release.

They apply for a 4 million dollar grant months ago. You would think they would already be able to tell the public Tuesday morning the ins and outs of the program! Private industry would have figured this out months ago!!! Wonder why the difference.

And what do you think all this "grant money" is? It's YOUR tax dollars, stupid!! There's no such thing as free money. 9-5 school day? heh - the storm of protest has yet begun and when it does, look out! Bruce Karam is an idiot to allow this to happen.

With the extra time being voluntary, how many of the students who actually need the help will volunteer to stay longer at school?

How many of the parents of these students who need the help will insist their children stay in school an extra1.5 hours a day?

Don't we hear all of the time that parents are part of the problem with achievement in the UCSD because they don't care enough to be involved?

Does this increase the pension benefit for those teachers who will be staying and being paid for this this extra time? It the teacher pension benefit based on highest earning years like it is in much of New York State union dominated employment?

Will someone be tracking this program over the next two years to see if there truly is a benefit?

Amen brother. Obviously Mr Karam thinks otherwise. Bottom line it's all about money - nothing else. He doesn't give a dam about improved test scores.

With the longer school hours, it's only going to make things worse. Kids are going be burned out after school. By the time they're done with homework, it'll be time for them to go to bed with no free time to relax.

the district cLaims it's not hiring anyone new for this lol that's because they already hired them without posting the jobs. sorry to say but i foresee the kids doing just as miserably because the so-called teachers will look upon this as an opportunity to haul in more easy bucks and not as an opportunity to help the kids.

It's worth a try. If performance improves it has a good chance at being implemented at other schools.

Education is overrated for them, bring back 1800's child labor, make em work at Nano, those small hands will be useful for installing delicate parts
