Police officers and firefighters are not professionals. Both started that misconception years ago. It is false. Cops and firefighters are unskilled, blue-collar laborers, and they should be payed accordingly. If not, they will destroy our local economies, and private individuals and businesses will continue flocking to regions where police and fire compensation is more in line with their true value -- substantially less. It's called "voting with your feet." You may have heard of that.

Most, not all, cops and firefighters have nothing more than a high school diploma or associates degree from a community college in a soft discipline, like criminal justice. They think this means they know the law better than we do. If they knew the law, they would know everyone is equal in the eyes of the law, and that's the basis upon which they hold people accountable to law. If not, ignorance would be a defense, and everyone knows it's not.

If most cops and firefighters were not fortunate enough to have their jobs, they would be mall cops, national guard members and volunteer firefighters with blue lights on their dashboards.

Real losers. Not all, but most. And they're destroying us.

That's the cost of law enforcement if you wanna save money then cut welfare. That's where all the wasted tax money is going. people are flocking to America for benefits and that's what draining us unfortunately police work is getting more dangerous and the market has been set. If people do not like it then they should not have police at all. Why would a guy go to several gun calls a week for 40 grand a year when he can work at wal Mary. I get your point but its only common sense that no one would want the job. I have mixed thoughts about a firemans pay being the same as police

Please leave your name and house number, this way the next time your home is on fire no blue collar uneducated firemen will show up. Oh, and if you happen to have a break in, please alert 911 that you do not wish a community college educated officer to show up either.

Your complete lack of knowledge as to the training or commitment it takes to do either of these jobs is sickening. Their education is ongoing and required by state law, and in some regions now being overseen on a national level. Dont believe that, check out EMS, which is now on a national registry. I DO AGREE that some may have an attitude unbecoming of their profession. They are exceptions, and we have ALL dealt with those individuals. HOWEVER, I've worked in EMS for over twenty years, on a volunteer basis. My spouse has been a volunteer fireman and in EMS for over thirty. My brother has worked in law enforcement for over fifteen. I'm proud to serve my community. Each person in the profession you spoke of exists to take care of low life, self indulgent, persons such as yourself. Your sense of entitlement is sickening. If you want my opinion, celebrities and athletes are a waste of financial resources. Firemen, EMS, law enforcement, and members of the military are necessary. If you think they are overpaid DONT call them, DONT acknowledge everything they do, and by GOD pray you never need them because God only knows you dont deserve to utlize the oxygen or space you are currently wasting.

That's what the founding fathers of our nation intended. A military is for protecting the country. Personal protection is up to you.

Oh, boo hoo. Police are brutes, bullies and road tyrants. Firemen can't wait to tell you that they are firemen and want you to look at them in awe. If you belong to a union, the you are a simple minded fool and are a bottom feeder and deserve the same respect and pay.

Agree 100%. I live near both. Drunks, womanizers, lazy and general azzholes. Paid far beyond what they earn and what they deserve. One of them can't construct a coherent sentence. A Professional has many years of higher education and is intelligent. Cops go to MV for six months, and firefighters are taught how to wind hoses and say that the building was too hot to go into and do their job. The corruption in this nasty town(Julian, for one) put them in a far higher pay grade than anywhere else. The taxpayers get to pay for these lowlife living far beyond to what they are entitled. As far as needing any of their services, you are better off without either. The cops will blame it on you, no matter what the case, and the firefighters will let your house hit the ground because they are too damn lazy to put out the fire. Get a pistol permit and fire insurance--far better than either one of them.
