They left with all the intelligent people long ago. Anyone who thinks a "sports complex is a good idea needs to look around utica is overloaded with it. Who is going to pay for it? The soccor moms and dads? What about spending the money on intellectual growth? You see all around the results of millions spent on sports arenas and lights and complexes in these schools that churn out illiterates and criminals addicted to *me*. There is no money to pay for it and the area is full of the dumb idiots who place sports above knowing how to change a light bulb or reason their way out of a soccer net. Thats why the prisons, public service jobs cops and manual laborers are the largest employers in the area. Plant corn get corn. If you want your child to learn exersise and health there are many ways that don't cost a fortune and do nothing to bring real jobs into the city. If you want your kid to feel like a sports superstar then buy him on eof those nylon gold coated trophies and save us the millions.

And how is making a sports complex considered "progress"? If that was progress Utica would be a world class city we already have several stadiums, the aud the fields at the colleges and proctor and every school around. But in academics the kids being produced are all little wigger wanabees who can't read or think of anyone but themselves. The jails are full of them. Some are employed there. What success! You want that go pay for it and put it on your property.

Ppl want what they want not what the the city needs, the new selfish breed of 80s & 90s babies. This city has no priorities whatsoever, take a ride down churchill Ave. starting @ Noyes, I want that street closed because its a safety hazared, but what needs to be done (fix it) the city is not willing to spend the money on.

We live in an era of entitlement and instant gratification. These qualities have caused the current economic downfall and the seemingly slow recovery. Money was available, credit was available and people latched onto it not thinking of long-term implications. Now here we are with high unemployment and increasing federal and personal debt. The mindset of us is fix it now, make it better, but I better not have to pay for it.

This mindset is also on the smaller scale when Utica does try to do better. Anything anyone in this city or county attempts to do is met with negativity...usually lashed out internet-style. Forums like Topix are flooded with rude, crude, uninformed and unbalanced posts. Many are outright lies and defamatory.

I'm a lifelong resident and the city is not what is was 30 years ago when I was a kid. I did not come from money, but both parents worked hard. I could go to Addison Miller pool, Watson Williams park, a friend's house in Cornhill, the zoo, the parkway to sled or ice skate. I could walk to the corner store without worry of being hurt. My friends and I would play outside until the streetlights came on. The neighbors were our parents second set of eyes. School was a safe and enjoyable place with the occasional hallway fight. Now, everything above is gone. Our security and familiarity along with our pride in our hometown is gone. It's hard not to be able to be proud of where you came from.

No one is perfect and there are certainly people out there with malevolent agendas, but I will say that if people turned their negativity and doubt into positive action, the city could grow into something beautiful. Start at home and be proud of it. Keep your property in good shape, spend time with your family and get involved with activities in the community. It may be hard, but try it. Try making Utica a better place a little effort at a time.

Yikes....was that a sermon or what.

The only people I ever saw complain about a sermon were usually the stupid ones who had a hard time reading something bigger than their Halo game box.

Well there's your own answer loser. You were educated at "Procto-hole" - raised thinking sports was some kind of god and your family never made it off Brinkerhoff avenue? Which jail or walmart do you all work at? Maybe a big stadium will help your future!

I see the advantage of the roundabout if all the studies are valid but taking a loan to blow on a stadium for the T-ball crowd is ridiculous there are enough fields and pools and rinks and tracks. We pay for sports games in the schools and enough city upkeep taxes for existing parks we shouldn't have to support more of this it will not do anything for the economy of the rest of utica or all these facilities would have already done it we've had parks and lots of recreation for ages here. Enjoying a sport is one thing but almost all the sports obsessed trophy wavers and sportos I ever knew didn't end up with a lot of marketable skills or wealth on average. There are stats that show this. Why would you keep promoting more wasteful sports venue ideas when this game culture is what got us where we are today? Why can't they waste a few million on something that will offer the children something more than a promise of "sportsmanship"? What about promoting something that encourages more valuable learning? Something that will help them solve problems or put food on the table? For an area with so many sports and game facilities I see an area that is heavy on bragging, vindictiveness, violence, dependency and service industries. Draw your own conclusions.
