Leaks? Leaks about what? Seriously. It's an article talking about pursuing a chip plant. I could release an article about me pursuing Cindy Crawford. How stupid are you people in utica. Seriously. It's the same story repackaged and released annually and never comes true. Please explain to me how the utican region could attract well educated people to man this operation there. They can't. And that's only one hurdle.
Not only is it the same old thing re-packaged, like the rest it is costing the taxpayers a lot of money.

For all you negative, piss-poor excuses for people do us all a favor...MOVE. Go where you think its better and let everyone who wants to see this area prosper get on with it. Eventually this is going to happen and hopefully you are living in a van down by the river! I am going to find a way to use it to my advantage like everyone else should. Let me know when you are leaving, I'll send over some people to help you pack!

For all you who don't pay attention to those things in government and in your community that have an adverse effect on everyone's quality of life - wake up. Turn off Duck Dynasty, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, American Idol.... and pay attention to the things that really impact our lives. Like the fact that the agreement that was just announced is between two taxpayer funded entities. There is no private investment in this at this point. What that means is that the taxpayers are footing the bill for the build-out just like they are doing with the new AHL team taking to this ice this fall at the Aud. Wake up and smell the coffee. We and our children are being sold down the river.

The other thing is this. Do not confuse being realistic with being negative. There are many in this region who love the area but hate what every layer of state and municipal government have done to bring it to where we are. For those that actually pay attention to the important things, that is just fact and not emotional negativity. Who in their right mind wouldn't want this region to prosper? The thing is though there are right and wrong ways to do that. Taking more and more taxpayer money and throwing it at the problem is obviously not the answer. It's been tried for generations and hasn't worked.

How many hundreds of millions have been sunk into this nano to nowhere so far? When did it "start"? Wasn't this something Hillary and Destitos started babbling about once on one of Hillary's "Listening Tours" where she talks at you?

This time is different. The Army Corp of Engineers was making it very difficult to market the Marcy site. Now that Albany is taking the site and a larger role in the project it is a huge plus for bringing in the IBM, Samsung type business. It would be a benefit to SunyIT and Utica itself. This has potential because there are shovels in the ground now and after a little more red tape is cut then it will start to fall into place slow and fast at times.

Well, that's reassuring.

Hey, could you give me an update on the multi-billion dollar investment and thousands of jobs at the Photonics Center? I'm sure you remember that project from the early 90s. It was a public/private partnership that was supposed to leverage the area's unique resources to create a state of the art high-tech complex to commercialize the latest in photonics research. All together about $76 million dollars of State and Federal funds were spent "getting it off the ground". That's not adjusted for inflation, of course.

Surely you remember the press conferences with Roanne Destito, Anthony Picente, Joe Griffo...why, it's the exact same cast of characters that's recently been in the news. What an amazing coincidence!

Somehow, I've missed the building of the actual center. What's confusing me is that the New York Photonics Development Corporation, where all those millions of dollars went, is still around. Still slurping up money for a pipe-dream project that went nowhere.

Heck, why don't you Google it up. Take a look at who's sitting on the board of directors.

And then tell me again, with a really, really hopeful look on your face, that "this time is different".

The first plant will cost $15 billion. Where does the money come from? This is a publicly financed project. The state of NY doesn't have that kind of cash laying around. They can't even finance the Tappenzee Bridge replacement without federal help .... So please tell me, where does the money come from ...

Perhaps you didn't notice, but tens of thousands of people have done just that. The result has been a precipitous decline in the area's income and educational levels, while the average age of residents has skyrocketed.

Put simply, you, and people like you, have driven away the area's best and brightest with your inane boosterism. How's that working out for you?
Go where you think its better and let everyone who wants to see this area prosper get on with it.
See, that's exactly what I mean about "inane boosterism". Everybody wants to see the area prosper. Sadly, that's exactly what the same insipid cast of characters relies on to line their pockets. They've done an outstanding job of making big promises, but very little actual follow through.

There's nothing to indicate this time is different.
Eventually this is going to happen and hopefully you are living in a van down by the river!
That would be the Mohawk River, the one filled with industrial effluent and untreated sewage?

Please, tell me how that river is going to look with another 12 million gallons a day of industrial discharge getting pumped into it. Currently, there are absolutely no plans for an on-site treatment facility at the Super-Ultra-Nanocenter. The existing proposal shows a single discharge pipe leading to the Oneida County system. That would be the system that's already overwhelmed, hence the flow of human feces into the Mohawk River.
Let me know when you are leaving, I'll send over some people to help you pack!
The next series of departures will be in January, followed by a much more massive one in June of next year.

That's when another few thousand of the area's best will graduate college and leave, following your sage advice.

That's certainly worked out great, hasn't it?

About $200 million. Roughly $70 million for site prep,$127 million for the Computer Chip Commercialization project.

Mind you, I think you can date it's start back to 1989 with the proposals for the Photonics Center. That project was essentially identical to what's being floated today. Counting the money invested in that boondoggle the total is running around $270 million dollars.

Not adjusted for inflation.

Something something public/private partnership something something investment something something. Something something thousands of jobs something something major partners something something.

I believe that accurately summarizes the current state of financing.

Pretty much. There are zero private investors interested in doing this in the utica region. Save your tax dollars.

Who the fk CARES why they're there? THIS is why you people are so gullible and stupid! You talk about utter nonsense and spilt milk. The fact is TSMC and Samsung ARE NOT going anywhere NEAR you or your insipid state to get robbed, regulated and bullied. They LOOKED at you. The DIDN'T LIKE WHAT THEY SAW!
Let's get back to the subject morons. You have been duped with Nano to Nowhere and most recently they dropped names to make it look like, laughably, IBM, TSMC, Intel, and Samsung are "all working together" to build you morons a nano nano factory when that's not even what the group meets for or involves themselves in when working on the 450 group. Observer Dispatch fed that to you idiots hook line and sinker because EVEN THEY don't have the savvy to know what it's about. You are going nowhere folks.

It is very obvious to anyone who has the ability to think clearly, that all of this is nothing more than nonsense, smoke and mirrors, and fairytales, designed to placate the average Utican, who graduated from Proctor. Just another story to make Uticans feel all warm and fuzzy about how wonderful it is to live in the tomatoe pie and halfmoon cookie capitol of the northern hemisphere.

Non of the businesses want to come any where near utica. This city is poor and has an extremely high tax rate for businesses. The cost effect of them opening up one of these plants here would be too great. Look at gm in cogwall in far upstate New York. They closed the plant and laid off 98% of the employees. To costly to open it near utica. Also not trying to be a jerk but how many people in this area know anything about nano technology? Not a lot. It's a dream and its all talk. Lower the business tax rate and educate some people in the nano technology field and maybe it would happen but to costly for these c.e.o's to en here. Not worth it
