You guys arguing over a team that doesn't and won't exist is so idiotic. Move on. Get jobs or something. Yes there were talks and I suppose it once made sense for Calgary to come check us out (which they did) but they have since made their decision. Life goes on. Please don't beat this up all summer long.

If you want the AHL that bad go watch Crunch...they open the post-season up this Saturday I believe.

Not sayin it's 100% over, but you gotta admit our chances just went from hero-to-zero in past few days...

Maybe in the media and some people's eyes. I have been following it very closely actually. Aquillini has been trying for a while to buy that damn sports complex. From the best I can tell its the flames playing hardball. They want more money and they'll gladly leave. The private ownership portion of the heat I'm sure wants to leave as they are making zero money on their investment. Sure their losses are covered by the taxpayers but people don't invest money to make zero profit. They also realize that if vancouver is denied things will only get worse. Also if vancouver puts that ahl franchise anywhere close to abbotsford that's a nightmare scenario for that team. They're in a staring contest right now.

OK, we'll see. I just don't see Calgary budging at all.
Deadline for all of this is May 13th.

Plenty of time that considering up until two days ago calgary and the heat were publicaly denying anything. Now all of a sudden they make this type of statement essentially reversing everything they stated for two months? They are holding most of the cards right now but not all of them. Aqulini usually gets what he wants. It's very interesting reading if you have the time to do some google searching to see how this is playing out. Hit some of the Calgary and vancouver boards. Very interesting reading.

The city of Abbotsford owns the sports complex and it it they who have rejected offers to buy it.

Here's another tidbit published yesterday:
"PEORIA The Vancouver Canucks came to Peoria on Tuesday.
Now the Peoria Civic Center will try to keep them here.
The NHL team, which bought the AHL's Peoria Rivermen from the St. Louis Blues, arrived for a tour of the facility and a meeting with top officials that could begin the groundwork toward a deal.."

and

"Vancouver is believed to be looking at Utica, N.Y., and the Seattle-Tacoma area as well as Peoria. A highly-placed source with a minor-league assessed Peoria as a "clear-cut best option" among those candidates. Travel costs would be a major expense for Vancouver to operate its farm team out west."

http://www.pjstar.com/news/x1213304042/Civic-...

One has to ask how now it is Vancouver that is looking at Utica if there is indeed an existing deal in place with Calgary.

Like I said before, a lot of moving parts here each dependant on the success of the others. It would appear that the Heat out of Abbotsford failing has put a monkey wrench in the works.

Rather than opting for "the boards" and all of the guesses and rumors, I opted for newspaper reports. The most recent had the Canucks, new owners of the Peoria Rivermen, visiting Peoria yesterday to inspect the facility there.

Who made any statement that would lead anyone to believe that there is a signed deal in place that involves Utica? No one. More denials of any concrete deal from what I see. Your contention is and has been that there is a signed deal in place. That is obviously not true based on the facts and the denials from the key players.

...and up until two days ago the flames and the city of abbotsford denied there were any talks. Just stay tuned.

Don't know. I guess exploring their options if it does fall apart. I still believe aqulini is the type of guy who sets his sites on something and will not stop until he gets what he wants. Google him. He's an interesting guy and a very shrewd business guy. Relentless. I just hope the leak by the OD didn't hurt this which it may have especially with the work that's already been done to the aud. I still think if calgary and/or abbotsford doesn't budge aqulini will stick his team in chilliwack and shove it right up the flames asses.

I care because of the public funding aspect of this. I pay taxes. I think this area has had more than its' fair share of broken promises presented in the guise of economic development. By and large most have failed to meet expectations or failed completely. I've mentione them before - Hotel Utica, The Stanley, The City Center, The now half vacant Utica National building.... Do I have to go on? They all cost money. Taxpayer money. High taxes driven by those costs are at the root of the New York being the #1 most business unfriendly state in the US.
The other part of it is that if there is a deal then that means that we've (the taxpayers) been lied to in a big way. I guess what you are suggesting is that it's ok for my representatives to not only use my tax dollars for something I wholeheartedly disagree with but to lie to me too?
You and others like you want it because you like hockey. I like hockey too but I don't for a minute expect my fellow taxpayers to pick up the tab for it. You like hockey? Then pay for it. Rob Esche et al want an AHL team in Utica? Let Rob Esche et al pay for it. All of it. If it's a viable business then they will prosper and good for them. If it's not viable then why on earth should taxpayers subsidize it? Subsidize it the way the city of Abbottsford taxpayers are subsidizing the Heat to the tune of millions of Canadian dollars every year.
That's why I care.
Very good and true point!

For the record the taxpayers aren't subsidizing the team to the tune of millions of Canadian dollars per year.
