My great aunt died in July of 1990 and we had a reception at Dellars, but it burned shortly after that I think.

Santusky's on Varick had the best penny candy around. We used to get alot with our 25 cent allowance each week.

The Highland Theater next to Mahanna's. 25 cent admission! It later became Highland Hall..a teen dance hall.

We used to buy softshell crabs and helgremites at Abe's. Rosie's corner store Noyes St. at Matchews Ave. Frank $ Mary D'Esopos' corner store Ney Ave and Carolins St. The creaking of the swing sets at Pixley Park. The rag man. "The Gully" between Stars and Ney Ave. A huge Elm tree smack dab in the middle of the field, next to the trail between Pixley Park and Goodrich (?) ave. The patients at the Hospital grew good vegetables, and it was great therapy for them.

I don't remember the Brook's but I knew the Tarkowski's. I remember the bait shop, the Abels owned it and the shed at Addison Miller. Remember the nearby schools; Washington school on City
Street where we would have an Ice Cream Social every Fall. I would hit tennis balls off of the wall in the parking lot there.
Kernan School on York St which is still active.
Lincoln school on Kellogg Ave?
Lincoln school was on Mathews Ave.Yeah, good times!!!

West Utica was a community in transition in the 70's. Frankly, it was already fairly integrated at that point in time and was filled with many working class families who looked out for eachother. Heavy union blue collar...with the death of most average + manufacturing jobs, the neighborhood went down.

Dellers burned in the 80's I thought. Used to be a corner store on lower Schuyler that was owned by a Polish family.

Peters grocery store, Mahanna's Pharmacy, Carms Pharmacy, Foodland.

There was a little bodega type place on Whitesboro near the corner of Whitesboro St. and Schuyler. Very cool.

I know. The Polish place was the bodega on Lower Schuyler, Dellers at the end of Erie St.

By the way, does anyone remember if there was ever a diner type place at the West End Brewery?

At the exact location of the West End Brewery Shop was the Rainbow Bar & Grill, I think is was owned by the Tenza family. Up the street was Ted's Rainbow Market, I think it was operated by the Kowalski family. Poles Bar was on Varick St. and next door was Larry's Bakery. Of course both Reynolds Hareware & Tom's Barber Shop were in business during the 1970s and still are. A Mr. Mishalanie had a TV-Radio repair business on Cooper St. The Schmelcher family ran the West Utica Super Market on the corner of Court & Schuyler Sts., across the street was The Rosinski Liquor Store. The LaGault Auto Repair Shop was on the corner of Court & Stark Sts. Mike & John Kozar ran the bar on the corner of Sunset Ave. & Warren St., prior to that it was called Rozy's

Carmen Mazzotta owned & operated Carm's Pharmacy on Varick St. and passed away on Nov. 21, 2005 at age 85...
Valley Electronics operated an electronic component store in the Nudo building...
Central Electronics use to operated out of large brick building in the old Globe Mill parking lot and was run by the Roach family {they had an hugh inventory of used electronic equipment}...

what happened to west utica was first the working class factories moved south and overseas, then the predispositioned drunks of west utica got hooked on Utica Club , with nothing better to do with their time , then their offspring they hatched got hooked on crack and then the bad blacks moved in ,then they released the mentally sick people into the vacated homes along Whitesboro Street, thus the rest of the sane people got the fuxxx out leaving a big welfare, drunk, criminal, leachin g bunch of bums with useless lives walking out in the street with nothing to do but leach off society.
