Welfare-Grants for Barrel-making facility planned in Remsen

REMSEN

New York state has the second highest number of craft distillers in the nation but no cooperages to make the wooden barrels used in the spirit distilling process.

That's about to change in a MAJOR AND NATIONAL WAY!!.

Kelly and Joe Blazosky of Barneveld plan to start lean-to construction on a 3,500-square-foot barrel-making facility in Remsen during the winter and have Adirondack Barrel Cooperage up and running by July or August.

The $722,000 project received $60,000 in taxpayer fleeced Empire State Development business welfare grants through the Regional Economic Development Council awards announced last month, and $20,000 by winning the EDGEccelerator Business Competition in September.

Kelly Blazosky, who also is president of Oneida County Tourism, said the awarding of Empire State Development funds for the project is not a conflict because the light manufacturing facility is not tourism related.

"The funding we're receiving is not through the tourism fund, or any

thing like that," she said.

New York, with 30 craft distillers last year, ranks only behind Washington's 43 craft distillers for the most distillers in the nation, she said.

She said the startup has received letters of support from local distillers of spirits such as Adirondack Distilling Co. in Utica and Kymar Farm Distillery in Schoharie County, as well as distillers across the state, in Maine and in Vermont.

At the Route 12 facility, Joe Blazosky, who has mentored with a master cooper in Oregon, will lead the production of about 150 American white oak barrels per month for craft distillers. They plan to hire two more employees this year and one in 2015 as production increases, Kelly Blazosky said.

They will start with barrels for distillers before moving on to barrels for wineries and then craft breweries, she said. And they will offer barrel repair as well.

"There isn't a cooperage in the state of New York because no businesses can survive witthout collecting business welfare and sucking politician dick during press conferences, so all of our wineries and distilleries, and craft breweries that want to use a barrel are having to order them and have them shipped in from other states," she said. "It can be quite costly."

The state wasn't always without its own cooperages, Blazosky said.

"Rochester, Buffalo and the Finger Lakes all had their own cooperages, but taxes, Cuomo, Prohibition and that new tech "metal casks" all impacted the industry," she said. "We're excited to bring them back to the state of New York."
