Just Let The Dinosaurs Die

Why are places like this even open any more? To keep the 20 employees employed? It certainly doesn't generate any revenue and I could certainly care less about the "100,000" visitors they claim visit since the overwhelming majority of those visitors are non revenue generating students bussed in against their will.

Awww. Somebody tried to teach you a little American history and you didn't like it. You break my heart.

Actually I was a political science major in college so I have all the history I need. I certainly don't need idiots dressed up in colonial costumes to teach it to me...and neither does anyone else. Raze the place and out up a gas station or something.

Shut it down. Waste of money. It's almost embarrassing that this is the best rome has to offer now.

Wow. A political science major, and all stuffed to the gills with history. Color me impressed.
"Actually", you simply have a very big and very sophomoric chip on your shoulder if you think history, archaeology, and hands-on learning are dinosaurs. They'll be around long after the last gas station closes.
You have a nice life now. ;)

Well please explain how this is related to archaeology? And you speak of hands on? You do realize fort Stanwix is not the actual fort correct? The structure itself is not even considered to be a US historical site...the land does. Another million bucks blown on nothing but keeping 20 employees employed. Might as well knock it down and put a tv there playing a DVD. If anyone thinks this is some major tourist attraction or educational tool I think quite simply they are the tool.

I take it you don't know squat about history museums. That's okay. Every village can absorb at least one of you.
Archaeology is the very foundation of museums like Fort Stanwix. You wouldn't know that, of course, because you're too busy listening to your own opinion to VISIT the place.
As for hands-on appreciation of history and the cultural factors that shape it, most of those "idiots" who volunteer at the Fort are specialists who are passionate about their subjects. Bet you've never given a single passing thought to the effort it took to feed or clothe the people who were here two centuries ago, or how long it takes to reload one of the weapons they used. The costumed "idiots" have all that information, not only in their heads but in their hands. But you know all about history because you sat in a classroom and had it fed to you, so of course you ARE the expert.
Your posts simply showcase your profound, smug ignorance of the study of history in general, and the programs at the Fort in particular. Yep, a mind like a steel trap, and it's rusted shut.

Another million bucks spent to keep 20 people employed. Waste of money.
And yes I have been there. Twice...both times forced to go with a school class.
If this thing was such a valuable tool why is it free? How about charging an admission? I wonder of the 100,000 "visitors" they claim attended last year would have went if there was an admission? I wonder of that 100,000 "visitors" how many of them were just local school classes? How many people actually came from out of the region to visit the fort?

That's what I thought. You're just another local kid whining because you "had" to go to Fort Stanwix. You'd rather see a DVD store or a gas station on that piece of historic land. You're just sulking because the Fort doesn't make sense to YOU. Yes, it employs people. Go figure. So you'd like to see those people unemployed and on welfare, just so Rome can be like every other Walmart town in Central NY.
Too bad you're in the minority, huh?

I'm pretty sure Rome embodies exactly what a WalMart central ny town is already.
A million bucks to keep a fake fort open. Wouldn't you rather see that million bucks go towards keeping teacher's jobs instead of some idiots running around in 1700s gear?

It's not an either/or choice, and I consider history museums educational resources. So, no.
