It's funny because these "If you don't like it than leave" comments are exactly the problem. Anyone paying attention to the comments here would understand that the issue isn't really with the employees but the corporate culture.

"no better, no worse"? How many regional offices, lines of business and departments have we lost in the past three years? Evaluating staff is a necessary process but going to work feels more like a matter of WHEN the axe will fall rather than IF. You're crazy if you aren't shopping your resume.

Upper management allowed for this mad scramble to save the company from AM Best. Their decisions now are reactive and desperate. A pioneering and proactive company could have mitigated the damage to personnel by fixing things when they should have been fixed. People have a right to be bitter.

All that can't be helped now, but management could at least recognize they're creating this culture themselves. They can't provide us with the perks we used to have, and that's fine. We can take that on the chin. Just stop standing over our shoulders like the grim reaper.

Either Utica Natuonal will be taken over by a larger insurance carrier or the doors will be closed for good within 3 years. That's my prediction, take it for what it's worth. I work in the Home Office, and there's rumors swirling daily. I won't sit here & bash the company that pays me, but I will say the culture that has been set forth by years of poor management & poor decision making is starting to take it's toll on all employees, good ones, and bad ones. A good friend of mine who works in the Downtown office said there are 10 current job openings down there and within the last two months over a dozen people have quit between claims and underwriters. She said the underwriting manager and claims manager have horrible reputations amongst their peers and nobody wants to work for either of them. That's just the small downtown office. Multiply that chaos by 20 and you have the Home Office! It's so sad to see. This could be a major employer and contributor to this community. And it's a community that could desperately use it. When I was a kid anyone who had a parent that worked for Utica National was "lucky". Who is saying that now? Most people feel bad for the ones that are still here. Ugh.

I am sorry but I work there, and issue is with the employees not just the management. You have an old population that is not used to new tricks. Cobol, mainframe, smoke brakes ... are things of the past. It is a stinking corporation, it will work you to death. There is no changing, you don't like it, leave. Your job security is only in your skills. If you don't have them, it your own fault.

I have almost 20yrs & I'm scared. I want to be able to retire from the company within 3 yrs, but, who knows? I'm so afraid they'll find a reason to get rid of me before then. I go to work everyday a nervous wreck!

Job security is not in your skills at Utica National. When they decided to outsource the coders/clerical staff in CCS, they kept 8 people, and the majority of the people they kept did not have a lot of experience with the job they did. Not bashing the people that got to stay, but they certainly didn't base who stayed on skills, experience, or seniority. They keep the people that go along w/ whatever they decide, even if it doesn't make any sense. And then, when they no longer have any use for them, they'll give them the ax too.
I still talk to some people there from other departments, and they're wondering when their jobs are next. I do hope that no one loses their job/jobs, it's not a fun thing to go through!
Good luck Utica National!

This post hits the nail on the head. Management(Doug) is aware of the claims manager and underwriting manager. I believe some action has taken place on the claims manager. They soon will be going after the underwriting manager. The company is definitely in trouble. I am hoping for at least 2 more years. Then I can get out of this chit hole.

Definition[edit]
Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines[3] micromanagement as "manage[ment] especially with excessive control or attention on details". Dictionary.com defines micromanagement as "manage[ment] or control with excessive attention to minor details".[4] The online dictionary Encarta defined micromanagement as "atten[tion] to small details in management: control [of] a person or a situation by paying extreme attention to small details".[5]
The notion of micromanagement can be extended to any social context where one person takes a bully approach, in the level of control and influence over the members of a group. Often, this excessive obsession with the most minute of details causes a direct management failure in the ability to focus on the major details.[1]
Absolute type of bully management in flounders commercial u/w dept by management that has no previous comm'l experience. Go figure why am best rating got downgraded!

Most of the management is made up of scabs from other companies. How can a company function with these people in place. In addition, you have a ceo that has no clue how to run a company. His track record definitely proves he is one of the worst ceo's. Good luck to all you idiots, and scabs...
