•Richard Hanna voted to raise the National Debt Limit
•Hanna pulled strings for defense contracts in companies he’s heavily invested
•He was the only Republican to vote against a January bill that would have banned health insurance plans from covering abortion services under the Affordable Care Act
•In his first term, he voted against legislation that would have cut off federal aid for Planned Parenthood
•Richard Hanna 3rd most liberal Republican in Congress according the National Journal
There are a couple of things that need to be said.

First is that listing votes like this is a very poor and uneducated way to make a point. If one is really interested in how the congressman voted and why they should go to his website and read his explanations of why he voted the way he did:
http://hanna.house.gov/
More often than not you'll find that there is much more to the story that a one line summary like you are seeing here.

Second, why would he agree to a debate with Tenney? Think about it. From his perspective what is to be gained by a debate? Clearly the answer is nothing. He can only lose ground because most people won't watch the debate and then form their opinions from 10 second sound bites and one line summaries like in the post I'm responding to. Why take the chance especially when he has the obvious lead in public opinion?

This district, like most of the country I think, is center right(not liberal) in their politics. Center right may seem liberal to somone on the hard right but it's not. It's why Sherry Bohlert won as many elections as he did and why Michael Arcuri(liberal Democrat) was defeated. Tenney is far right. That doesn't appeal to enough people right now. It may in a few more years as the country continues in economic decline. Just not right now.

What Hanna was trying to say was that the Republican Party has very little to offer women. He was pointing out that the extreme ring wing that is trying to take over the party has determined that women’s rights are not on their agenda. That women would be better served by voting Democratic. He was not entirely wrong.

Explain why any woman, gay or minority voter would choose to vote Republican? We have become the party of exclusion. Unless you follow the hardline doctrines of the extremist wing of the party you are made to feel like an outsider. What if I am a Republican that believes in gay rights, or limited gun control, or I’m pro-choice? We (the Republican Party) have become an all-or-nothing exclusive club. The tea-party wing has determined who can be invited to the party. Toe the line or you are not wanted.

This is not about why or why not some group should vote Republican. This is about why Republican voters in this district should vote for Hanna after he called Republicans extremists and told women to give their money to the Democrats. Tell me why we Republicans should support him?

If you are a hardline conservative Republican, vote for Tenney. If you think the Republican party has moved too far to the right, vote for Hanna. If you want to see the tea-party Republicans control the future of this country, vote for Tenney. If you want more moderate Republicans to control the party, vote for Hanna.

Extremist conservative Republicans will never win the Whitehouse. You can’t win the presidency by excluding women, Latinos, blacks, gays, environmentalists and working class union members. Unless we move to appeal to these voters we are doomed to eight years of bitching about a Hillary Clinton Presidency. Let’s face it, if we couldn’t defeat Obama with his dismal track record two years ago, how can we hope to beat Hillary.

Just another example of a one line summary that is misleading. He didn't call ALL Republicans extremists. What he said was that he was frustrated that may Republicans were catering to the extreme right wing. In politics as in life the best answers to difficult problems lie somewhere in the middle rather than at either extreme. Politics work best when there is compromise. The extremes don't want anything to do with compromise.

"Republican Rep. Richard Hanna of New York tells the local Syracuse paper that he's "frustrated" with how much deference the Republican Party gives its most extreme members, singling out Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota for her suggestion that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin might have ties to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood"

Show me the Hanna equivalent on the Democratic side. Show me a Democrat who calls his party's leadership extremists. Show me the Democrat who tells women to donate their money to Republicans. Hanna has been pissing in his own food dish long enough. As a Republican I'm tired of working hard to get him elected only have him crap all over "his" party after he is elected. He is an ungrateful political opportunist.

No one has given one positive accomplishment of Hanna that demonstrates why he should be supported by Republicans. None!

A challenge from the right never worked against Boehlert, although as an Assemblywoman Tenney is a legitimate candidate.

I understand that a low turnout, which is likely, favors Tenney, but I can't for the life of me figure out why on earth she is doing this. Is being an Assemblywoman that awful of a job? Clearly there's games afoot here us ordinary peon citizens aren't privy to.

He hasn't sponsored a single piece of un-constitutional legislation.

Sadly, Ms. Tenney can't claim the same.

Hanna hasn't robbed a bank either. So what? See, there are no positive reasons for Republicans to vote for Hanna. He cannot stand on his record nor can he defend it in a public debate. Hanna is not the candidate he was 6 years ago. He says he supports term limits. Let's see him lead by example

If you want a RINO, vote for Dick.

If you want your Federal Representative to be a class act and not campaign by throwing turds with a toilet brush (with OINkers paying for it), vote for Dick.

If you want somebody so scared of BHO that he won't even show up when he lands at Griffiss, vote for Dick.

But if you want somebody that will represent the more conservative feelings up this Upstate district, vote for Claudia.

Even the hoi-polloi Republican "leaders" have said how uncomfortable they are with Dick's campaign. I've heard it with my own ears.

And would the same people brownnosing for Dick quit using multiple aliases here, we can see through your 5th-grade grammar and usage of the language.

Yeah, you did. This is what you said in the previous post I responded to:
"This is about why Republican voters in this district should vote for Hanna after he called Republicans extremists..."

You make no distinction in your post just as Tenney makes no distinction in her ads. If one were to take what you said in your post and what Tenney says in her ads then one would get the impression that he did indeed call all Republicans extremists. That's misleading and not at all what the truth is.

Hanna is a proponent of the ERA(Equal Rights Amendment). At a rally in support of the ERA Hanna said women should support Democrats because Democrats are better advocates for women's rights than the Republican party as currently constituted. He also said he believes there are plenty of Republicans who do support women's rights. That is the context of the "women should give money to Democrats" statement. That's more than a little different than the way that you and the assemblywoman portray what he said. Are you not in favor of equal rights for women?

This current conversation is not about Democrats and Democrat equivalents anyway. It's about Hanna vs. Tenney.

Here's a link to legislation either sponsored of co-sponsored by Hanna.
http://hanna.house.gov/sponsored-legislation/
It should be up to individual voters to look at what he proposes and the explanations he gives for how he votes in making up their mind about him. This, rather than relying on the half-truths and distortions of the facts that both you and the assemblywoman are throwing out there.

Why in the world would you say that he's an "ungrateful political opportunist"? In what way is he an ungrateful political opportunist? Is it because he doesn't always vote in lockstep with his party and that he does what his conscience tells him is in the best interest of his constituents?

Dems are not "moderate". Sure they win because they buy all their votes with giveaways. Good Reps.( like Tenny) should stand tall for what they truly believe in and not "compromise". The compromise always ends with the libtards getting the better end of the deal. Yes she and people like her might lose but only until the other shoe drops. When that day comes its not going to be ptetty, and that day is coming.

I think that is a great idea. If Tenney runs as a ultra-right wing conservative she will lose the primary. There are not enough tea-party Republicans in this area. Central NY has elected centrist candidates for the last 40 years. This year will be no different. In order to win she needs to win the moderate Republicans that elected Hanna.

Ok, here is my spin on this race. I am a Republican and will be voting in the primary. I voted for Hanna in the last 2 races, however I am disappointed with his voting record as well as some of the things he has said. It is clear that as long as he remains left of Tenney (which he will) he will win another term. That is unfortunate because I do not believe he has represented our district well.

I will be voting for Tenney, however I do not feel she has a chance at winning. She comes across mean spirited and her continued hatred for the OIN will further turn off voters. If in the unlikely event that she does win, you can surely count on a "one and done" result as she will get no support from the Repub's in 2016 and the Dem's will be gunning for the seat.

But one 2 year term might be what this district needs to shake things up a bit!!

About 2 or 3 years ago I was at a local restaurant with some friends and Ms. Tenney was part of our group. I had the opportunity to sit close to her and was able to converse with here on a couple of subjects.
Regrettably, it was very difficult to get a word in edgewise with her, and no ones opinion on a subject was more important or informed than hers. I realize that as an Assemblyperson she was probably knowledgeable on many issues, but to discredit the opinions of others, many of who were her constituents was surprising.

I left thinking is that someone who I really want representing me?
