The City of Utica has the lowest consumer confidence in the state according to the results of a recent Siena College poll released Wednesday.

The Siena Research Institute’s Quarterly Index of Consumer Sentiment measures people’s willingness to spend in nine New York State markets, and found that in the third quarter, Utica’s overall confidence is down 4.8 points from this time last year to 63.4.

The overall index number represents current and future consumer sentiment, of which Utica was down 2.6 and 6 points respectively.

Buying plans, which measures the percentage of respondents who plan specific expenditures in the next six months, were mixed for Utica.

Compared to this time last year, plans to purchase cars and trucks and major home improvements were down slightly, but up a bit in the areas of home and furniture buying. The city came in last place in the newly formed expected consumer electronics purchasing category.

Overall consumer sentiment was down all across the state, with only Buffalo’s index number increasing very slightly to 73.8 points. While down slightly from last quarter, New York City had the highest overall consumer confidence at 79.6 points.

“It was a tough quarter for New York State,” said Dr. Douglas Lonnstrom, professor of statistics and finance at Siena College and SRI founding director.“It saw some hopeful signs, but ended with fear over the federal shutdown and pending debt ceiling standoff.”

The survey was conducted from July to September prior to the partial shutdown of the federal government.

this is not surprising. the closing of Burrito Jonz has shaken Utica's confidence to the core.

People spend money when they are a) happy b) have hope and c) have money. There isn't too much of either of those things to go around in Utica.
That hasn't stopped the idiots that borrow money from banks to buy their next snowmobile or 4-wheeler to cover up their depression... The Mohawk Valley is living proof that you don't have the above listed qualities to spend money...
