Get your kids out of the UCSD and enroll them in the charter school. It is worth the effort.

UTICA
West Utica Citizens will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday discussing the Utica Academy of Science Charter School, which is slated to open at Holy Trinity Church's empty parish school building in fall.

The meeting will take place at the school, 1208 Lincoln Avenue.

Tolga Hayali, director of the Utica Academy of Science Charter School, and Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School will speak at 7:30 p.m.

Only the union thugs are this worried about an alternative to today's lousy public schools.

For every five charter schools that opens three close. They are not what they are all cracked up to be. Plus they destroy public education as for every child that attends a charter school that child's original district looses that funding. Wake up people a charter school is not the answer to Uticas problems

Yes, the creepy, crawly, dried up Utica teachers and their godfathers are coming out their cracks in the wall to badmouth a decent alternative to their "no learn" school. The charter school is a win-win, no matter how long it lasts. Five years of an education or even one year is worth more than twelve years in the rotting, putrid environment provide by the corrupt teachers and administrators in the "no learn" district. All the whiz bang dons that object to this have no one to blame but themselves for decades of failure to teach, blatant patronage, exorbitant benefits and shameless squandering of tax money. May you all rot.

Are any of the teachers state certified?

This will be funded on the backs of the tax payers. Charter schools are not the answer!

Yes the teachers are state certified. NYS law mandates that. They do not belong to unions so they are not influenced by the mob bosses that run them. They are hired based on qualifications, not on patronage or family ties. They actually have to teach in a classroom and show accountability for the progress of the students. You will actually find that they are interested in teaching and in helping the kids and not interested in whether or not there will be a snow day coming up. Amazingly, they don't spend their class time staring out windows like too many UCSD teachers do.

Charter schools are private therefore teachers DO NOT need to be New York State certified. Just as the Catholic Schools including Norte Dame do not have all nys certified teachers

As a mother of 3 kids in this district, I am hopeful and excited for this new option. Lets not start bashing until we have all the facts. A lot of unanswered questons still on this. It definately sounds interesting and worth looking into.

You are way off. Charter schools are supported by tax dollars and are NOT private. The teachers are certified as is required by NYS law. I can't help but wonder what Utica teacher, union cronie, or administrator posted this bullcrap. Try teaching instead of lying.

Charter schools are public schools, toots, and yes the teachers need to be certified. You make me laugh. Look at the results the certified teachers get in the uitca schools--they harm the kids more than help them, so why lie about something that is a none issue. BTW, all catholic schools in the utica area have certified teachers, and I'm definitely no fan but at least I tell the truth. The diocese stopped hiring uncerified decades ago. Get a life.

We can all see the "value" this NYS certification lends to the public school experience.

1. Charter schools are public schools not private

2. All Charter school teachers have to be NYS certified

3. The Utica Charter school has no teacher union and the related expenses

4. The charter school is paid per student by the state at a rate of 2/3 of what the regular public schools recive per student

5. The charter, granted by the state, is good for only 5 years. If the school fails to meet pre-determined goals the charter is not renewed and the school closes.

6. The current charter in Utica is fo 176 students.

In New York City the United Federation of Teachers union fought against charter schools and said that if they had a charter school they could run it just as well as their non-union counterparts. In 2002 they were granted a charter. That school is now in danger of being closed because it is one of the worst perfroming schools in all of New York City graduating only 56% of their students.

Charter schools offer an alternative to the union dominated, monopoly public school system. The unions have everything to lose if the Utica charter schools succeeds so look for them and thier scck puppets on the Utica Board of Education to continue to rail against the idea.

The charter, a five year agreement, is granted by the state and the charter schools have to live by all of the rules laid out in the charter.

Here's the charter school law:

You must be a teacher that sees the writing on the wall. After all those years of not teaching and harming a kid's learning experience you are finally going to get your comeuppance.

If any of you district employees out there are worried about the charter school decreasing your numbers, please don't. The Refugee Center has another surprise for you. In a couple of months, they are importing the first of several boatloads of SYRIAN REFUGEES. Your numbers will continue to climb and the seats will be filled with students who neither understand you or care. You will still be able to do and say anything you want and they won't know the difference. Heck, you can read the paper, order online and drink your coffee all day. They'll think that's normal. Your routine and life won't change because of the charter school. Relax.

It's quite simple people...we need to separate the students who really want to learn away from the knuckle draggers who view school as one big sorority/frat house. Once complete, we will be able to properly rename the school...it will be called Rikers Island Proctor campus. Any questions?
