Sorry Suzy q they are not. My mother who is 89 laid on a stretcher for 13 hours before getting a room on a floor. 89 years old laying on a bed in the hall while less ill younger patients were comfortably resting in a room. Unfortunately the next time she had to go the co pay Lady got there before the doctor..

Haven't been to the emergency room in awhile. There are times I thought we had to wait too long and other times we did not seem to have a long wait. Never a pleasant experience because we only ever go if someone is really in a bad way.....if we can wait to see the doc in the office, that is what we do. Awful feeling to see a loved one suffering and not being able to get anyone to help. We spend as much time as possible with mom when she has to be in the hospital so that we know she is getting good care, as we do whatever non medical stuff needs to be done. Not enough nurses to take care of everyone. Very tough stressful job.

I will not argue that it takes longer than usual to answer a call bell in a timely manner, or that the ER is a shithole... but I WILL say that today's day & age, "patient care" is having to deal with repetitive paperwork on the conputer. Working overnights, nurses start off with 5-8 patients, depending on the staff.(Next time you're in the hospital do your own investigation. Look at the main board. you can see it yourself.) There is a CRUCIAL need for more nurses, but "because of the budget", we fail to see the opportunity to hire. The health care system is really messed up. What I CAN tell you is there are 9/10 nurses running their behinds off, doing everything they can to help their patients, & missing time with their own family because they are staying pass their shift to do paywork. People are getting burned out! & yes, patients are getting the care they deserve. Don't blame the nurses... blame the administration.. Who receive an annual raise of probably 10 new hires, blame the government for not giving the funding.

Well two yrs ago, I sold my home a 300k home to my kids for $20.00. I still live there and pay the mortgage, just had to get it out of my name. Now I owe the hospital 47k and I am not paying them. Going bankrupt!! payback time

Blame the nurses union....Some nurses are working because it's their passion, those are the good ones. Get rid of the slack asses who are just in it for the paycheck...

Dear Mr Handwich
I think all nurse become nurses because it is their passion...believe me. Nobody would do what we do if they didn't have a strong desire to help people. You have no idea. None.

Interesting concept , for all of you complainers please don't come back. Go to Oneida, or Rome. Hahahahahaha. Or basset lol. We've gotten a few transfers from some of bassets screw ups. Also a squeaky clean perfect brand new hospital isn't always a good thing, you have to ask, what are they covering up lol. If you have unrealistic expectations your not going to be pleased with any hospital. The fact is , we didn't make your loved one sick, we're trying to help, you breathing down our necks and criticizing everything we do is definitely not going to get your loved one better care lol, your gonna become the dreaded room that no nurse wants. Be nice give respect and you and your loved one will get it back tenfold. It's just the way of the world you damn jack wagons.

I took my daughter to St. Luke's ER. She was in respiratory distress and I was afraid she was going to die. We waited in a room for over 25 minutes before they took her name. Then we waited again. It was a full hour before she was even allowed in an examining room. No one examined her until after we were in the exam room for another 25 minutes. The troll they have collecting co-pays was there IMMEDIATELY demanding a fifty dollar co-pay. Like I remembered to bring money while watching my daughter gasp for breath. I threw the troll out of the room and she threw an envelope at me with a copay bill. Nice place.....BTW, we were the only people in the waiting room at that early morning hour so don't blame it on too many people ahead of me.
Wasn't a emergency, people think the emergency room is for toothache, toe pain, ear infection, and so on. Wake up people!!!

You haven't seen bad until you've gone to Bassett. How do you miss a stroke? They did after my aunt sat in their emergency room for two days.

PS--St. E's is the big welfare hospital---you probably already know that first hand, don't ya darlin...
St Eades, was at one time a good hospital, Like in the 60's. One night, I had hurt myself, and it was going on for weeks. I could not get into bed, it hurt so bad. It took the ambulance 20 minutes to get me down 3 steps, as the stretcher could not fit on my porch. They took me in, and some girl comes in, makes a snide remark, and I just lay there 3 hours in pain, until a new shift came on, who cared for me. They told me I was coming there too much, but would say each time, if it doesn't get better -come back. Then, I went to the clinic (Dear God!) on Hobart st, only to be laughed at, ignored, no examination, and even had a nurse call me to say the DR was an a$$hole and other better Dr's were there. Come to find out-they have student DR's there.(Ever see them running into that room?) They all go there for a real Dr's advice.
I will never allow any Dr from Utica to touch me ever again! All the good Dr's are retired now, or dead. If, you get sick-take off! Go to Cooperstown, or Syracuse. Stay here and your dead!

Er's have PRIORITIES!! There are sick people there. If, you need immediate attention and deemed at risk, they will see to you immediately

Triage! The assessment of need. You sit there, ambulance's come in with people who may be in more need than you. What you may perceive, or view as "life threatening" is most likely not.
many, go to the ER for minor things. It tales TIME to evaluate and assess a sick person. They don't know your history, and must make sound choices. Next time, call your Dr. to get faster help!
as far as nurses, it's not the fault of the care givers! You have 2-3 nurses for a floor with 20 people in need all at once!
If, you are family sitting there-get up off your fat duff, and help the person!! Big deal they have to pee, you can hand them a urinal. If one of mine goes in, I'm there to help!! NOT COMPLAIN! or CRY because they are busy.
I suffer with chronic pain, and have been in ER's many times. It sucks yes, but, alternatives?
Typical of Utica and those who never leave here.
You ought to KNOW, you put your life in these people's hands. Me? I kiss their butts. I'm not stupid!

Call an ambulance maybe? Get her treated by paramedics in the field before even getting to the hospital!

Never been to Rome but I had wonderful experiences at both the Hamilton and Oneida hospitals as an inpatient and at the er. They were quick, clean, friendly and thorough. I have not been to St Luke's in 12 years for maternity and never to St E's so I can't compare but I would recommend the smaller hospitals for routine issues if you are not happy about the crowds.

Respiratory distress is most certainly an EMERGENCY, tootsie. Next time you can't breathe, go to an ER where you are ignored and tell us how great it was...you don't really need to breathe, do you??/

Maybe she/he did...just because the meat wagon transports you to the hospital doesn't mean the service is any faster. Paramedics aren't equipped to do EVERYTHING and sometimes they even make things worse and delay bettertreatment.. Besides, sometimes it's faster just to get there yourself if the distance is short.

Oh if only you knew what you were talking about. Your ignorance is disturbing. The days of "ambulance drivers" is so over. Just so you know, there are so many things that I can do in the field prior to arrival. Things that we can do as standing orders. Not sure how you figure a paramedic will make things worse. Extensive education and training puts us at a level where we can often intervene with immediate and positive results. If you or a loved one is truly in need them go ahead, drive yourself, don't use 911, but educate yourself properly before you make foolish comments. Better that you keep quiet than attempt to falsely educate or accuse. Sad. So sad.

Oh and don't forget the direct line of communication we have with the er doctors. So if we relay pt condition then yes, if necessary a patient will get seen faster via ambulance. Don't make statements you don't know the real story about.
