I just got a promotion at work. I'm now making $70,000 a year at the police department. My wife works for the district attorney making $45,000. We have it pretty good.

99% of the threads, and subsequent postings on Topix are just ravings by ignorant, narrow minded assholes!

This thread is the 1% exception.....and every post has some validity. On paper, the cost of living "appears" low, but things like the mentioned property taxes, sales tax, and poor quality jobs certainly offset that.

Twenty two dollars an hour for this area, is very good....people here are forced to get by on a LOT LESS, so I have no sympathy. At the same time, I'm not saying it's right! Cronyism, and nepotism have been rampant for so long here, we have become insensitive to it. It has become (sadly) the accepted norm. So much so, the local media does NO INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING to point it out!!!
The result is....precisely what we are enduring. There are SOLUTIONS, but if they don't provide substantial reward to politicians, they simply do not come to fruition.

Again, shame on the local media for its lack of investigative reporting. Then again...it's almost understandable....can you picture the likes of fat-ass Jason Powles doing something greater than struggling to read a teleprompter?

Uticans are often the blunt of jokes for being ignorant, and uninformed....while somewhat true, it is not entirely their fault, when considering the local media is their primary source of information.

Republican or Democrat, their "interests" are the same....self serving, while the public interests are secondary. The only difference is their methods!!!

In the words of Thomas Jefferson, " Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."

Welcome to all that hope and change these idiot politicians gave us! If anyone votes for a democrat, they are total idiots. Wake up America!
Total idiots believe that one party or another is superioor to the other. Can't you see that your situation doesn't change for the better when there is a change in the power structure?
Both major parties keep stealing you blind while they laugh at you for arguing which party is better.

All you have to do is move to a tax free zone, declare yourself a business and there you go ten years tax free.

$22 per hour full time is just a little over $45,000 per year before taxes. That's really not that much when you break it down. If your house is around $200k the mortgage payment with taxes and insurance is around $1500 monthly. Then add food, national grid, phone, cable, medical and auto insurance, gas, water, childcare and other expenses like clothing and you are lucky to break even.
My wife and I make around $90k before taxes and don't have much to show for it once the bills are paid. It's possible to raise a family on $22 per hour but not easy.

I agree. Your working to pay for a 200k house. Then your tapped out. What about vacations, home improvements and investments?

What luxuries? Food? I'm not driving a fancy car, we don't wear designer clothes, there really isn't much to cut out.
As for the house, it is in a wonderful neighborhood in a good school district and already appreciated by around $50,000 in the 5 years we have owned it. I will downsize when the kids leave the nest. In my original post I was simply stated that $22 per hour is not a huge income.

I agree. Unions are no longer needed anymore. Maybe back 30 or more years ago they were. However with the standards that we have today, a union is NOT needed. They do way MORE harm than good. They cause employers to move operations to overseas because its cheaper and less of a hassle.
Just say NO to unions!!!
What an imbisil. I'm union and make $34.40/ an hour before benefits are added in. It totals to around $63/hr. That's a living wage, you moron union haters are happy with your shit jobs making 15-20 an hour. I wouldn't get out of bed for that

I never said anything abut necessities. I personally can't work just to pay for a home and utilities. I live in a home paid < 100k for in a great neighborhood in utica. I've personally fixed it up with my own hands the way I want it. I make > $22 hour. Also have two kids. Because of my modest home. I have $ for vacation, retirement and other wants.

I am one of the lucky Rome teachers that make in excess of 87000 per year for 4-5 hours a day work 180 days a year! Perscription's cost almost nothing for my family. District pay for almost all the medical insurance. Can't beat it. Everyone should come work for the Rome City School's! Lots of money to be made for very little work!
