$22/hour =$45,760/year

I'm on unemployment and my wife is in school but we still survive.

BTW maximum unemployment is $405/week =$21,060/year.

Try living UNDER your means.

for us it means cutting back, taking freelance jobs to offset unemployment and every so often hitting the savings.

Good paying jobs left long before the current administation took office. Hard to blame either party for the demise of American made products. Hard line unions ran many companies away with their unrealistic demands.

Well how many children do you have? What is your rent-mortgage payment? Do you have car loans?

You may need to live below your means. You can't have diamond taste on a cubic zirconia budget.

You should learn how to budget your money. I would suggest seeking budget help.

I agree. Unions are no longer needed anymore. Maybe back 30 or more years ago they were. However with the standards that we have today, a union is NOT needed. They do way MORE harm than good. They cause employers to move operations to overseas because its cheaper and less of a hassle.

Just say NO to unions!!!

I agree, even in Utica it is tough to make it on 50K a year, and if you have a child in college, forget it. I see all these beautiful hundreds of thousands of dollar homes all over the area and wonder where do people work that can afford them.

It is hard to feel bad for you.$22/hour is a decent living in this area. We are not Las Angelas. With a little budgeting (or a lot) you can get on track.

It is so easy to not only "get by", bt live well in this area cheaply. All of us pay too much of our hard earned $$ for unneccessary items. Get rid of your credit cards, divert 25% of your $$ to savings, and think before you buy-everything from lattes to vacations.

Between the mortage, the college tuition and the medical costs, not even counting the car payment, or normal bills, food, it takes a good chunk of income to make it here.

I just changed jobs into a traineeship. I make around $19.85 an hour. I made more at my previous job but that was from the OT. In 2-years I'll make $26+ an hour. After 3-years I'll have enough experience to take a job that pays $30 an hour. After 6-years in that job I'd rate $40 an hour not adjusting for inflation. The next step up, which can be 4 to 5 years from now, the job rates at a little over $47 an hour.

All I can say is keep trying and educate yourself. Relocate if need be. Unions are a good thing and essential if we are to have a middle class.

I keep hearing how "affordable" it is to live in this area. I'm not from this area and I can honestly tell you that while there are some things in this area that are more affordable than others, there are also MANY things in this area that make it just as expensive to live here. The out of control property taxes, sales taxes, utility rates/costs, and gas prices are a few things. Lump that in with the "lower than average" pay scale and lack of quality employment, and you're no better off living in this area.
Yes gas is high all over, that is not the issue. The issue is that gas in this area is consistently 8-10% more expensive than other areas of the country.

I'll agree that housing is more affordable. You can get more square footage bang for your buck in this area. Unfortunately, the trade off is higher property taxes and trying to keep up with the astronomical if not criminal utility rates!

If u can't make it on $22/hr, then u, obviously, are charged to the hilt with zero savings. Sad, but true. That's why so many can't retire. They spent it all.

yes, because the republican lead congress did better? Have you ever tried to changes a Trilliion dollar economy? Heck we have million dollar companies that take years to restructure. If you do not think the other side (both sides) have something to offer then you are missing a lot.

Seems to me that, up until the Democrats took control of Congress 2007, there was a whole lot of money being made and spent in this country. Once the Democrats got the majority, the stock market took a shit, housing values started to fall, and the price of oil went through the f**king roof. I am not saying the Republicans are perfect, but the Democrats idea of getting out of debt is to spend more money...are you kidding me! If I'm having trouble paying my mortgage, I'm not going to take a home equity loan to pay off my credit cards.

Try being physically disabled and living on $760.00 a month Social Security! I wish I could go back to work but I can't. Try living within your means. Don't take on more than you can handle! My parents raised 5 kids on a single salary of $300.00 a week! You gotta budget, budget, budget!
