Utica "mobsters" ( if you could call them that ) were a joke. They were the dipshits that couldn't do squat in any other area so they sent them here figuring they'd still be smarter than the rest of the wanna be mobsters.... Its no different today.. Except now its wannbe gangsters and the same scenario... Oootica may have had the title " sin city" and the only reason for that was because ( hang on wait for its gonna be a shocker) because so very much like today , the political figure heads were all screwing the city over left and right and lining their own pockets..

Funny how things never change.... Utica was nothing then, its even more of a nothing now and in 20 years from now it'll be even more of a nothing.... Except east west north and south ooktica will be filled with moon crickets... Say what you want but y'all know its true...

Those saying Utica was never mobbed up do not know what they are talking about. They forget that in the early part of the 20th century Utica was a financial powerhouse due in part to the Erie Canal. The mob used the Hulbert House during prohibition as an out if town meeting place. In the late 40's or early 50's a friend of mine's father stopped for an after work beer downtown. When one of the other drinkers left he was cut down by machine gun fire in the street. Nobody moved because they knew what it was about. In the 50's a Utican was on one of the popular nationally televised game shows and referred to Utica as the "little Chicago".. He was paid a "visit" when he got home. Utica was a big player during prohibition as a direct route from Canada to the crime families of NYC. It is an interesting story that no one wants to talk about still. I always suspected my cousin's other grandparents were "connected" since grandpa seemed to be able to "fix" any problem and they had more money than was explainable if you know what I mean.
and truer words were never spoken...you, my friend, are 'spot on'.

Rufus Elefante was much more a "God Father" than a thug. He and Utica Mayor (Warren?) brought jobs and prosperity to the Utica area during the 40's. Ruffie was a proud Italian-American, and as an example, helped Italians who were persecuted by Irish-Americans even unto the Utica Fire Dept. Regardless of what descent You happened to be, if You knocked on Ruffie's door, and were a Gentleman of Honor, He would help You if He could.
He was a quality Person.

Good for you!! If, you were of Italian decent, you had a job in Utica! It did not matter where. Ruffie took care of all the people from the boot.
As far as anything else, the kids now have no clue as to old Utica. When, he was around, EVERYONE had work. As soon as he died, the work left Utica, and has never come back. All you had to do was know WHO to go to, then a short trip to Uncle Henry's Pancake house where he held office, and you went to work!
I must say: the ignorance of most people in Utica and those who post here, reflects the REASONS that Utica is a sh*t hole it is now. Anyone-with any education is smart enough to leave and get a real life. I left @ 17 to enlist in 1968, and I got the education of a lifetime. Yes, Utica sucks. But! It's those who continue to stay here and tolerate paying for the stupid moves the cops traditionally make, untrained-hire most anyone(Lindsey) and put up with it!
Rufus was an animal, a common criminal, and he rots in hell this very day! Praise God!
