The ahl is going smaller to places likee utica. If utica can stay above 3000 on average at the end of the year teams will be begging to come here if vancouver leaves. The ahl can not afford places like albany which has a 15k person arena averageing 2400 per game. They would rather be in adirondak or utica and average that. The aud is dirt cheap compared to renting the old pepsi arena not to mention it is going to be one of the best arenas pound for pound after construction.
Old Pepsi arena? Well it's the times union center and it was opened in 1990. The aud was built in 1959. Get your facts straight tough guy. Lol

Anywho, Utica blank stare isn't me. Although, I do know where delmar,ny is....
I suppose this person and I share the same opinion to a certain degree and maybe you can't handle it? Too bad. Free speech and all that. Enjoy the one season of AHL hockey in my former hometown of CHU-tica. And when it's over, there's always Duck Dynasty and WWE for you to pay attention to. God forbid you should read a book...
You can't have a reasonable debate with ignorant people. I do live in clifton park however. One day my location showed as delmar. Not sure why. That's a solid 20 miles from my home if not more.

<quoted text> do you actually think Vancouver is that big of a a hole to pull their team after one year?? They are a professional team run by professionals. I'm sure they would like to have their team in abbotsford, but they have made a commitment to utica for six years. If their plan was abbotsford next season they just would have left the team dormant for a year. Quit honestly there has not been any talk whatsoever out of vancouver or abbotsford about a move. The team will end up there eventually, but there's no big hurry to do it. Otherwise they would a shelled out the bucks and paid the heat to leave. In fact your the only one saying this, and I seriously doubt you work for the canucks. In fact you probably don't have a job.
Yes I do have a job and the Canucks will absolutely be in abbottsford next season. The only reason they chose utica was to NOT be dormant for a season. My goodness, this is not rocket science.

I agree that the Canucks would be better off financially and in terms of fan base were they to be located in Abbotsford. I have a few questions though.

What about the 10 year deal that Calgary has with Abbotsford? It's a sweet deal that guarantees at least break even on operating costs. Why would Calgary give something like that up? Something like that is potentially worth millions.

The Canucks signed a 6-year deal with Utica. Is there an escape clause? How do they get out of that deal if they were to move to Abbotsford? With all of the moving parts, a deal like you outline would cost the Canucks a fortune. Does moving to Abbotsford come out on top in a cost/benefit analysis for Vancouver?

If you turn out to be right in this then it would mean that the hockey fans of this area got hoodwinked by Rob Esche and friends in a big way. There was a lot of speculation about what you are saying before the team ever got to Utica. How do you think that goes over after so many in this area have invested their time, money and other support to the Canucks franchise?

How are fans going to feel when all of the black, blue and green merchandise they got for Christmas yesterday is out of date for next season?

There is an escape clause for the city of abbottsford after this season. I'm sure there were escape clauses built into the utica deal as well as there usually are in minor pro sports. I'm also still confident that utica will be able to secure another parent club it's just that vancouver won't be it.

Any deal for Abbotsford is contingent on the Calgary Flames acceptance. They are only about half way through their 10 year deal that mandates the taxpayers of Abbotsford foot the bill for an operating deficits. Pretty sweet. Why in the world would Calgary give that deal up unless they were paid millions to get out? Makes no sense regardless how bad the owner of the Canucks and maybe the city of Abbotsford want it to be so.

If you're right and Vancouver exercises and escape clause(provided there is one and we don't know that for sure) I'm not sure Utica is a shoe-in for another team given past history with the Devils and recent attendance declines. The whole package is more than just putting fannies in the seats too. It's also merchandising and concessions. Less people in the seats (for whatever reason) means less revenue in those two areas.

It's way too early to talk about another failure of AHL hockey in Utica but this certainly could end up being another broken dream that costs the taxpayers millions.

I haven't been paying attention much lately but did find this article from November kind of interesting. Read the comments as well. One poster asks the same question I have about why Calgary would give up such a sweet deal.

yes i saw that article too, abbotsford has been coughing up around 1.5 million a year to keep the team afloat. i cant imagine the flames will settle for less than 1.5 million a year for the last 5 yrs. the politicians will be hung in front of city hall. and i cant imagine the voters wanting to get another team in there very soon after this raping.

vancouuver wants the same terms as the flames have now. and thats never going to happen.

as far as the comets go, attendance should rebound with the team now winning. the casual fan got fed up with the loosing and had better things to do.hopefully this weekends games should be 3500 plus crowds.

<quoted text> nice post. We I know to escape the Utica comets 6 yr deal, its going to cost vancouver a lot if money. It was the politicians that got the 6th yr added and the amount of the escape clause. And its not in Vancouver's favor at all. This clown has all the answers except where all the millions are going to come from to buy out the comets and the heat. Remember one thing, vancouver didn't want to spend 250 grand to put the franchise dormant for one year. Why are they going yo spend a million to buy out the last 5 yes on the comets end alone???
Clown? Ok. The Canucks not choosing to go dormant has nothing to do with the 250k fee. Do you have any idea how much the Canucks owner is worth? He's one of the wealthiest individuals in Canada.

like was said before, if they wanted the team in abbotsford so bad, it would be there now..
the canucks were unhappy with what abbotsford offered vancouver compared to what was offered the flames. that will be the sticking point.

vancouvers best option to get what they want out of abbotsford is to make them keep the heat or leave them without a team for a season or two.

as you said, this guy is worth millions, he didnt get that way by throwing money away like you are suggesting.he do. he got millions by out waiting people and making them sweat till he gets what he wants out of them.

business men always put business first, vancouver will stay in utica instead of forking out big bucks to get out of the six year deal they have, and the canucks will make abbotsford sweat it out with the heat disaster.....

case closed, go home and go to bed........

No. Actually when it was opened it was called the Knickerbocker Arena. It became the Pepsi Arena in 1997 and then eventually the times union center in 2006. I suggest you get YOUR facts straight. Are you really this stupid or just ignorant?

i would say that your the one dreaming the fantasy that this owner is going to fork over 200,000 grand a year for buying out the next 5 yrs of the comets.

like was said before, hes a business man. you however have no clue what business is about expecting this guy to literally throw millions away and go in to Abbotsford on Abbotsfords terms.

he will go in there on HIS terms. and that will take some time. that's why the canucks are in Utica, Cause he didn't get what he wanted. and the flames didn't get what they wanted.

Deals like this are very time consuming, and complex, and whomever is the most patient wins!!!!

i hope the hell you don't own a business cause you would suck at it.......

Doesn't the AHL teams operating costs come into the bottom line too when figuring the whole financial picture? There is only the Abbotsford team in the whole Pacific Northwest and west coast. They have to fly to play any other team as do teams going to play them. That has to be a significant factor in determining where to place a team. The Comets I assume ride a bus to all their division games at signifcant cost savings.

well moron my point was that arena whatever the name is now is way to big to pay for based on the devils attendance. I think everyone got the point except you. It had nothing to do with the age of the building
