If there is a God, how did he manage to get things so wrong? Children are being raped and killed, people are killing each other, children are dieing from lack of food and water in foreign country's, we're dying of diseases we can't cure. Why doesn't he stop an airplane from crashing and killing hundreds of people? Why doesn't he stop a little girl from being buried alive by some guy that just raped her? Why does he allow people to burn to death in a fire? Why did he allow those planes to crash into the towers and killing so many mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters? Why does he allow a hurricane or tornado to form and destroy people's homes and killing them too? Why would he allow an innocent child to drown in a swimming pool? You could come up with thousands of scenarios of why's. Are we praying to something that doesn't exist? Why won't he let us know he's out there and end the confusion once and for all? And if he does exist, he's obviously allowing all this to happen but we're supposed to keep believing how great he is. I just don't get it!!!

I wish I knew the answer to even just one of your questions. What I do know is that the beauty that I see in the world makes me feel like there must be a God just as much as the ugly in the world makes me feel that there isn't.

What about the cancer survivor, what abut the people that made it through rough times, and just like you said there r millions of scenarious... by the way everyone is quick to blame God when things dont go right for them... Ever thought to blame the Devil???? He is the blame for all this not God... Read your bible!!!! Its easy for people to blame God when things r bad, but, r u there for him when things are good? u can't just be a christin some of the time.. people like u r so annoying!

That's because stupid weak-minded people always reach for religion. You basically asked a question that answers itself. If there were a real god who would do these things or allow them to occur if they were "all powerful". Religion is nothing more than a way to find the poorest most miserable people on earth and rob them even more.

God was created by the goverment (yes, even way back then) to keep people from jumping into the volcano when things went wrong. They would bring up that one in a million chance (miracle) when someone survived a tradegy and lived and accredited "god" for saving their lives. Of course there was a charge for this. The idea spread quickly and now religious groups make more money than the American Indian Casinos.

Exactly what is "hateful" about saying "there is no god?"

Methinks you might be the hateful one. Religion tends to do that. See The Crusades, The Thirty Years War, The French Religious Wars, The Reformation, Bosnia, Sudan, Islamic Fundamentalism.

If you actually read scripture, you will see that there is actually a reason for all that happens. God didn't continue the utopia after the f*ckup in the garden with the apples.
There is beauty in the world because of God. All in our natural world and life was brilliantly designed by God.
The evil in the world is the ward of satan. Starvation, murder, rape, terrorism, blacks, government and disease are what results from people following Satan's temptations.
There are rewards for people from God. We were not created to be minions but to willingly love God.

I didn't mention all the good he does because you would expect that of him, he's God. Maybe he does cure someone of cancer, but why then would he turn around and allow a child to be raped and killed? Why do good, then allow something so much worse to happen?

Then explain all of the deaths caused by religious people in the name of their particular make-believe god, done at the instigation of their religious leaders? Was that Satan at work? If so, then religion is evil. If not, the god is evil. Take your choice.

And Rusty ol' boy, you're a fool if you believe in the apple story. Still believe George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn't lie about it? ROFLMAO!

I hope you aren't related to the Jimmy Zigarelli family I grew up with in North Utica and went to Seymour School and lived close to St. Peters Church. If you are, your family would be ashamed of you. What have you to lose by believing in God? There's a 50-50 chance you may be wrong and what then?

I do not know why God lets bad things happen to good people either. There was a book written by Norman Vincent Peale with that name "why God lets bad things happen to good people." I have been meaning to read that book but never got around to it. Maybe I will try to find it on line and read it.

I myself am a Catholic and I believe in God. If I did not believe in God, I do not know how I could make it in this world. He does answer prayers and miracles do still happen.

It seems to me that bad things happen because so many people have embraced evil not good. Recently, I saw this saying on a protestant church billboard: "We spend so much time pushing God out of our lives and then when something goes wrong, He is the first one we blame."

If there is a God, which I really do not believe, then rapes, murders, hunger, abuse, suicides, still-births, war, etc.. etc.. would not be happening SOO frequently.. and it only seems to be getting worse! Religion is out there to help people feel better during hard times (ie. when a loved one dies and to give A SENSE of hope and peace.

That's the point. What then? When and what is "then"?
I live my life as good as I can and everyday I do for others. I don't need some anesthetic book to tell me how to live my life. Especially when that book is thousands of years old and has cost many mnay lives and s[read a lot of misery. It hardly does a very good job of explaining "everything". It's a fairytale created by ignorant ancient humans. It contradicts itself and relies almost completely upon "faith" and excuses drempt up by men. If that ridiculous book is the exquisite work of a real "god", well holy sh**it then mankind is in a lot of trouble!

Let's try it from another angle. Add up the total worth of a single religious nut's value to "god". Come work for me an hour a week at my house every weekend for the rest of your life, plus the occasional longer visit or errand. Help spread the word about what a great person I am and attract other people who see my "light". Come tell me your hopes and dreams. Give me your pocket change and ask my peaceful advice. What is that lifetime effort worth?
What paradise and peace of mind will I give you in return for all that? Would you do that without any solid proof of what I was offering you in "return"?Your proof will come only at the end of your time alive. Sounds like a hell of a deal? Or is it better yet to cut out the middle man and spread your own good light and kindness?

i don't think making that statement is hateful. to each his or her own when it comes to faith. what is hateful is when people call religion fairy tales and call those who believe in God weak minded. religion is a personal choice either way and shouldn't be criticized.
there's one particular poster here who posts under many names who is really hateful and his comments, not his belief system, makes me sick.

So why is it this question only comes up when things are going bad? I totally agree this is the wrong forum to address this question.
