I had a door to door salesman come to the house today wanting me to switch my supplier from National Grid to Gateway Energy. I know NY is deregulated but has anyone actually made the switch to another supplier and if so is there actually any savings? The Door to Door salesman didnt really like it when I refused to switch on the spot.

I switched in July of 2009. I am seeing a savings of about $75 monthly on this winters heating bill.
The rate is locked in for a year. They also promised a $75 dollar gift card which I should have received in October and I never did.

I'm saving about $70 a month over last year and I still have National Grid. I think it's because natural gas prices are much lower than same period last year.

Don't look at the money saved, look at cost per kilowat and per therm versus Nat Grid users. My Neighbors have Nat Grid and I have Gateway for a year now. My price for Electric is about the same and my rate for gas is lower....I save about $30/month over my neighbors Nat Grid rate. As far as the $75, you have to keep on them because they didn't send me mine either a year ago. Once I complained they sent the visa card for $75.

last year a door to door salesman they tried to have my elderly neighbor sign a year contract at a fixed price for gas & electric after she kept telling him she didn't want to sign a contract. AND the price was gonna be more per therm & kilowatt then NG was charging at that time, she would have been locked in at that higher price. and like others have posted, NG price actually went down since then.
when she kept refusing to sign, the salesman got rude and told her "she wasn't smart enough to understand" and she asked me to come over and give her advise. the salesman told me would be stupid not to sign up. I got the rude SOB to leave and she SAVED MONEY by staying with Nat Grid

Somehow my bill says "Gateway", but I don't recall signing anything to switch.

I seem to be saving. BUT, this winter has been the warmest I can ever remember.....

I never switch simply because I can never figure out the comparisons. Seems like you are betting on futures contracts and I don't know much about that.

Also, a door to door salesman talked a elderly relative into it too; this person clearly wouldn't have been able to make an informed decision but they bullied their way into a signed contract. Therefore, I will never switch to Gateway on principle.

I had someone call me to get me to switch and yes it's hard to compare. The price charged is the purchase price of the gas plus the delivery charge (then the fees. taxes and surcharges). I asked them if I could lock in a price for gas and they told me no. I told her that I thought that was curious because when gas was hitting the roof in 2008 venders were offering to lock in prices long term.(Thatís why you are better off being a contrarian). It seems that they don't want to lock them in now when the price has fallen through the floor. That's why you can't compare what you are really saving from an earlier time period without comparing therms used and price per therm. Natural gas has been falling precipitously.

After much prodding I finally got the girl who called to quote me what they charged their customers for gas for the preceding month. It was so far out of whack that I knew she did not know what whe was talking about and hung up.

My gas charge from National Grid for last month was .6637 (rounded) per therm. Anybody have what other companies charged for Feb.?

Please post what Agway charged you per therm for the purchase of gas for Feb. I assume that Nat'l Grid charges for delivery regardless of who the gas supplier is.

Perhaps others will post gas purchase charges from other service providers so that people can compare companies.

I don't get electric from Nat'l Grid but I think they are much higher than 7.793 cents a kWh. But the gas charge is high. See post #12. Nat'l Grid for Feb. was $0.6637 per therm.$0.8995 per therm is a rip off. Wow, that should be illegal. Did you lock in a long-term price at some point in the past? Buy your electric from Agway and get rid of them for gas.

Maybe some others will respond with some other suppliers' prices. Is anyone using another provider and can post their rates for Feb?
