OK, seriously folks, there are a lot of posters on here who say Utica is a dump, and this or that. If that is the case then SERIOUSLY, what do people feel is needed to turn it around? I know there will be some responses that say get rid of the mayor, politicians, minorities, etc...but it would be interesting to hear some legitimate positive ideas.
This may have been addressed before under another topic, and if it has, I apologize, but its time to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.
So that being said, please offer up some REAL ideas.

Starting point: Clean up the political scene dramatically. Overrun by cronyism and corruption, dominance by public safety unions, and custodial politicians who don't know the first thing about the true meaning of leadership. These dynamics and a culture of complacency are at the heart of the region's problems. Bombing it isn't the answer, blaming the people who live here isn't the answer, and pointing fingers at the bottom echelon of the population isn't the answer. Leadership (and the lack of it) is the answer.

good post.

This entire state is overrun by unions. There is problem #1. Secondly are career politicians. We don't need politics, we need people with some brains and ideas who can get things done.

A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal. and who are they gonna influence? the scum who sit on their porches blasting music and poppin out babies for more food stamps?
dummy trouble

Nothing can be done to save Utica - seriously. It is a city full of dummies. I guess the only way to clean this city up would be to trade populations with another city. Relocate all the dummies to another city and replace the population with smart people. Before you think I'm being funny or sarcastic, you might want to spend a few weeks living in Utica and see things for yourself. It's frightening sometimes how DIMWITTED people are. I never understood the jokes about Polacks or Russians until I moved to Yootica, I never understood racism until I moved to Yootica, I never understood why people hate Italians, or Catholics or Unions until I moved to Yootica.

Since shipping 27,000 non-productive, illiterate people to another city would be out of the question, I think bombing it would be the next best solution for saving it.

Vote me into office as your mayor. I will get things done. After I clean up the garbage that will be at the end of the corrupt paper trail, I will bring back all the jobs that have been chased away by the politicians who needed to make the family deals instead! We "WILL" have a blue-collar government this time!

Bring back the family. The family structure in Youtica has deteriorated to the point that it barely even exists anymore. All I see when I drive through town are a bunch of kids between the ages of 13-45 sitting on their porches with nothing to do. They look pretty sad and depressed. Once the older ones turn 50 they are officially old and useless (but at least they mellow out and don't pose any problems). And yet I wonder how many of them have had dozens of kids throughout their lives which they never even cared for.

The people in Utica even sound like dummies when you talk to them.
Its the Chernobyl of upstate NY, the industrial cancer and poster boy for why companies don't want to relocate there, even for low home values and a workforce that would do anything for pennies.

Encourage your children to go to school and live somewhere else. If you are not too old to be stuck in Utica, get out while you can.

Utica is like a big pocket of ignorance underneath a thick rug of moronic stupidity. Anyone can sense this by spending just a few hours in the 13501. The city is not worth complaining about or exploring too deeply, and yet that is all we do on this forum. And the things we turn up from exploring Yootica are what one would expect from a pocket of ignorance. We sound like broken records orbiting around the same three interrelated subjects: complaining about minorities, b****ing about local politics and trading and spreading gossip about local lowlives.

I guess we wouldn't waste our time like this if we had lives, but it is hard to have a life in a city that is completely devoid of any vitality, wealth, social opportunities, beauty or excitement whatsoever. I stopped caring about Utica long ago, and I guess I stopped caring about myself too. My only goal is to get the fk out of this place, and it should be everybody's dream.

Right - great architecture and yet nobody cares about preserving it, only trashing it.

Excellent Post!!!! We need an educated young person with fresh ideas, and the inner strength to stand up to all the old time politians who have kept the City of Utica under their corrupt thumbs for the past 50 years. We also need people in our State Government and Federal Governments to stop supporting all the parasites that are living off the Welfare system which us working people are supporting. Make Welfare a "work for it" temporary assistance. If we give them $400 a month - make them work for it unless they are physically incapable of doing this which will need a Medical Certificate signed by 3 different doctors.

What if the government where to take all the minority's and build them apartments in the middle
of the Catskills on the lowest point. We could turn utica back into a beautiful city where people left there doors open and neighbors talked and helped each other. I am pretty sure all the crack heads
and thieves and killers wouldn't walk back here.

Will donate 2x4's.

I do not think it should be the Adirondack's, the moose would be running scared, and the wolf's raped.

and when Hanna stepped aside, bringing up Julian, I thought that was going to be the young fresh face that might get Utica moving the right way again. that couldn't be farther from the truth in hindsight.

Utica needs a full house cleaning. the entire political structure needs to be completely gutted. You can't just vote in a new mayor and think everything will be hunky dory. Look at when Hanna was mayor. He didn't play the same games the Common Council did. One day he's suing them, then next they are counter suing, and on and on and on. That doesn't accomplish anything. Sure you can't possibly vote in EVERYBODY who will agree on EVERYTHING, but you can vote in some people that can work together with the same goals in mind, the good of this city and its people, not selfish ulterior motives.
