The truth of the matter is that not all auto shops and mechanics are equal. I'm TIRED of bringing my car to a body shop and getting ripped off. I'm also tired of my friends and other community members suffering the same way. I learn my lessons, as do we all, but without collaboration, we all PAY for it. Please give your stories of the good time and bad times you've had at shops because I want us to know which companies DESERVE OUR BUSINESS!

I will start with my own stories:

Maugeri's Auto Repair:

Thought they were reliable - turned out they were scamming us! Every time we brought in one of our cars, the price seemed reasonable, but the car kept needing to come back for the same reason! One vehicle came in 5 separate times in the same 6 weeks because brakes were making a weird smell PLUS they kept having us pay for it each time and the problem would come back up within a week! We even traded in an old vehicle for a newer one through them and that was nothing but a head ache. They told us everything was covered, but then within one month of getting the car from them SO MUCH went wrong and they kept saying each thing wasn't covered! Also, each time we brought our car there they always said something was going to break soon and that it was going to cost hundreds of dollars. Also, the key to the newer car broke right in the door handle and they said they would have to take the door off and it would cost a lot of money to remove.

How do I know that this was all a scam? Because we brought it to place our friend suggested, ORISKANY GARAGE. We told him about the brakes causing a smell, he said it was simple fix, fixed it on the spot, didn't charge us anything because it was so easy he said, and told us that they were putting in cheap fixes that they knew would break soon. He checked our cars and didn't see anything wrong with them that "needed to be fixed soon". Also, they took the broken key out WITH A MAGNET IN FIVE SECONDS and said that Maugeri's would have done the same and what they told us was a lie.

Oriskany Garage:

Amazing garage! They give us honest opinions every time. Sometime they fix problems we have in 5 minutes and don't even charge us. They give us lots of advice about where to get work done that they don't do. So many times they have been patient with us with concerns we have. Best garage I've ever dealt with.

Midland Collision:

They tried to commit insurance fraud and lie to us about prices to get us to pay more each phone call. My family member totaled his car and a tow truck came to pick it up. The tower said Utica paid for it. but it HAD to go to Midland Collision. We insisted on Oriskany Garage, but they said "it would be an extra charge of $25", which seemed fishy. The worker at Midland said to send our insurance rep over to estimate the damage and that it would be $25 a day for holding. We call the next day after our rep goes there and the man at Midland Collision said that no rep was there and it would have to stay a few more days. We call the insurance place and they confirm they went. We call again and they said "they must have forgot" and say now the price is $60 a day for holding and that if insurance does it, they charge even higher prices. Our insurance rep says that they are known for doing that and commonly try to make the insurer pay inflated prices. After numerous phone calls, we get a new worker on the phone and he says it was all a misunderstanding and that the original prices stand. They then denied they ever said the prices were higher!

In general, they are a fraudulent company, so I'd stay away in any time of crisis, and don't let them tow your car there EVER!

Carbone are crooks ! Took my kid's car in there for a recall...they said he needed 2 tie rods, ball bearings were bad, on and on.... labor was 98 dollars an hour. Total cost would be almost 500. Took car to the mechanic of a friend, He ran diagnostics on it, checked everything, and said it just needed one tie rod. Not bearings, nothing else. Everything checked out ok. 150 bucks total, including labor, and he put 4 new tires on to boot.
How can Carbone get away with this ? We have the estimate.. I should send it to the better business bureau.

Unfortunately we all have to be experts on our own vehicles these days or we will get screwed! Very few shops are trustworthy and they are all out to make more than the fair buck from us. Beware and educate yourself the best you can.

Repair shops base their fee on a labour book rate for any specific work done.It takes x amount of time to remove and replace x part . Does every repair go easy and are there some times more to it then originally diagnosed ,sure it happens all the time .Good honest techs should be able to articulate to the average owner the what's and whys of a specific repair ,and what unforeseen problems could be there .You should always ask for the estimate first never sign a work order giving the shop a carte blanc ,to do whatever .Prices of parts are easily checked against what you were charged, labour as I said is a pre agreed amount ,additional parts and labour are always a possibility. If you truly feel you were ripped off you have recourse at the DMV investigative division .The DMV investigates repair shop complaints and may Leeds to a hearing much like a small claims court .A repair shops NYS License could be fined ,probated or even revoked in the worst cases. You have rights ,but you shouldn't automatically think all shops are out to screw you.Ask the right questions first ,and as always in a capitalist transaction ,buyer beware! Hope that helped you.

You got a tie rod replaced and four new tires mounted and balanced for 150 bucks. I call BS. The cost of the tires is 150 alone.
