i remember east utica in the 70 and 80s when many italian boys were strung out on coke and hanging out at the east utica bars, and when there was a fire bug burning all the real estate by arson, I remember the lost souls strung out on herion and throwing up and some dying.I remember when all the crazy old men were roaming on the streets that should have been put on pills or away.I remember the local groups of kids with nothing to do and hanging on the street corners that you wouldnt go into their areas.I remember everyone smoking pot in proctor park and the pot was mixed with oregano and twigs.I remember that is when utice started going down the tubes.

I was a kid and my mother would take us to Carol's for a hamburger and french fries and drop us off at the Uptown theater to see a movie on Saturday afternoon. She would tell us to hide our burgers under our sweaters so the manager didn't see! Chanantry's use to be on Albany Street back then.
There was a Italian restaurant on Bleecker Street, I think it was on the corner of Bleecker and Milgate. Does anyone remember the name. Napolis Bakery was across the street.
The name of the restaurant on milgate and bleecker was Pensero's

Dont hate me for saying -
Lived in Brandegee Garden Apartments the first year the school was converted to apartments - think it was 1982-1984- 7th & 8th grade at Mt. Carmel school- 9/10th grade at Proctor.

Lived the East Utica kids on the street thing got stoned and wasted from 12 years old. Ate the sausage and peppers from Street fairs and church festivals.

Loved the girls in the area, every one of the friends who partied with me.

We held our dignity and respected everyone we knew-
We got along with each other, the older kids, adults, everyone.

I survived that life, and thank god driving through there that some semblance of the area is always unchanged, bakeries, people on the street, people moving and living, preserving the best of this town, the spirit of more than just living, but of Ethnic diversity coexisting and getting along.

Salute all of you! Hispanics, Italians, Bosnians, Laotians, Asians, Haitians, Africans, mixed cultures and heritages! I loved the East End when I was just finding my own voice and walked every street against my parents wishes to know the territory and mingle with others not from the same culture as mine personally.

Salute! Hang in there and love the time with your kids!

GOOD JOB Thanks for posting/keep coming back!
Did you move to where the pot is not lacecd with oregano now? It is better there?

Pills for old men! love that! Must of knew Delbert Chase too! I guess it is all in the age we were at the time we were alive in the 70s 80s and who we knew at the time.
I recall alot of stuck up East Utica "families" who migrated eventually to North Utica and the outskirts just to get away from all us "riff raff".
Hows that working for you today?
