Utica is lost and probably will have to merge with rural towns to survive and county takeover.

Utica blows both now and back in the 70's. Think there was no crime? Think again morons.
well if you check crime statistics for that era compare to the past ten or so years you will find that there was an eight amount of violent crime; Also there was a greater base of tax paying hard working citizens , also the population at the time was about thirty thousand more people than we have now.

The best restaurants--Grimadi's Basile's Pescatore's Ventura's The Alpine. St. Agnes dances were the best in the city! I walked over the black bridge all the time on my way to my Nanny's house from St. Anthony's. Chicago Market--Gary's card shop--Dan dee Donuts. The Italians on the corner of Bleeker and Mohawk at the clams stand. Brescias furniture store--Seneca Boot on Bleeker. DeTraglias has the best meats. It was a great place to grow up--it's a hellhole now. The city ruined it with their immigration love in.

To be fair, Typical EU, without immigration, the Grimaldis, Basiles, Pescatores, Venturas, Brescias, DeTraglias, Salernos and many others would have never made it to Utica!!!

After the coons burnt down half of cornhill they infested east Utica with their drugs, crime, garbage & welfare checks. That's why the east side went to hell. It was taken over by animals. And to be fair, there's also plenty of white trash running loose.

I remember living on Mohawk street and watching the feast from my upstairs bedroom window. The slaughter house and gagging from the stink walking to Brandegee School. My Mom and aunts working in the knitting mills on broad st. and all the long underwear we had with the drop flap on the backside. My beautiful jewelry box with the spinning ballerina from Melee's where my mother also worked - wish I still had it. But most of all sitting under my grandfather's grape vine on Tilden Ave - long, hot summer nights.
does anyine have grapevines anymore?

I REMEMBER MANY OF THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE MENTIONED ON THIS SIGHT. Those were great days . Never bored and all my neighbors were like family. I remember walking to Petes candy store on the corner of Bleeker and Bacon. I also remember when it was later Novas pizza and Tom Marchatelli worked there. I remember the centipede game that use to be in Novas and I always got the high score.(Still one of my favoerite arcade games by the way). I also remember the hotdog lady, you know the woman that went around the neighborhood telling hotdog jokes. I never did know her real name. I also remember father Mike from St. ANTHONYS CHURCH AND WHEN HE WOULD VISIT US AND OTHER FAMILIES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. So many great memories. Its too bad things will never be the way they were back then.
Deb, I believe the hot dog lady was Mary Bello, and Father Mike Bassano was the absolute greatest...Oh God, I wish we could go back..

ANyone remember Gold Medal Dairy on Belle ave, where the jerk-off Mancuso family is running the Sanitation service now.
I remember that at x-mas time you could go and they had free samples of delicious eggnog.
The Chicago Market on the west side of Mohawk and the Loblaw's on the east side, next door to the State St Mill and what about the Mill's factory store there also.
How about these three all opened at the same time in the Parkway plaza.... A&P Supermarket, Parkway Drugs and the east Utica branch of Marine Midland bank.
well said, my friend...those jerk-off Mancuso's have destroyed the area. Thanks to a never caring mayor and hi CODES who allow them to continue to break the law every day they stay there. We took them to court and the court ordered them to move out....did they? No, do you see the mayor or CODES enforcing?? dirty politicians

Boys and Girls club that was on Lansing St.
The wooded area that was between Leeds and Mohawk St.. there were some creeks there.
Before HSBC on Mohawk St was there..it was a wooded lot..and when I went to Conkling School we used to say that a murderer lived in the woods. There was a house there but forgot who lived in it... whoever it was, the poor person used to get harassed by kids all the time.
Quinn's park when the pool was open....also doing crafts at that park.
The guy who lived next to Conkling School on McQuade Ave...he had homing pigeons.
Record Giant and the arcade that was in the East Utica Plaza on Mohawk St...oh and the mini mall that was on the lower floor.
George's Pharmacy on South and Mohawk...how the cashier guy used to yell at us when we were kids to hurry up and get out.
Belvedere's near Proctor...
Wacky Wayne, Delbert, Crazy Eddie (my leg, my leg) and the rest of the East Utica nutty celebrities...
Gina's Gas and Goodies that was on lower Albany St.
Tebsherany's store that was on the corner of Rutger and Mohawk St...
The Freezer Fresh ice cream truck(light green truck) that sold REAL ICE CREAM
Ball's newstand downstown
Capri pizza downtown
Woolworth's
The little store that was near Woolworth's... I think its called the Gembox now... back in the day they sold the trendy Jordache purses.. I bought my first one there...
The Pancake house on LaFayette(I think it was that street)
White Castle that was downtown
The old Franklin Hotel downtown
Someone mentioned previously the circuses that were held at The Armory near Buckley Pool
Friendly's in South Utica (known for people meeting there for car races down Genny)
Gosh I can go on and on...
Nothing like the good ole days...
I was just reading your comment and notice the name Wacky Wayne and memories hit me like a truck I went to proctor while he was there wonder what ever happened to that nut job.But the 80's were truly good times in utica didn't know it at the time but they were some of the best of my life
