According state traffic counts, in 2010 North Genesee Street averaged between 24,259 and 30,772 cars a day. Commercial Drive’s numbers are nearly a match, averaging between 25,762 and 30,324 cars a day.

Okay, construction jobs (temporary), then retail and service jobs. Yeah, that'll keep the young professionals flocking in!

Sorry to inform you but the Harbor already started to happen. Can you say Holiday Inn Express. Also, another National Chain Hotel is going in front of the zoning board this month for the Harbor. Your a little behind in your current events.

The article lists one of North Utica's advantages as being a "high traffic" area. Well, once the arterial project is completed this won't be true anymore. People will be able to easily bypass North Genesee Street to get to North Utica rendering that area a dead zone.
Molly, most of North Utica is East of Genesee St. Please check your geography. Why,would you head a couple miles west then come back a couple miles east?

They may be getting another hotel but I would check out the ownership group and the occupancy rates of existing hotels first. Lol

I agree. It is all BS. What I disagree on is your statement that it will never happen. I think that as long as taxpayers stand by and allow their money to be spent on schemes like we see with the hockey team, then it is only a matter of time before tax dollars start to flow to Harbor Point under the guise of economic development. They just don't know any other way and are so deeply involved with government that they don't realize that they are a big part of the problem.

Get government out of the way. Lower taxes, reduce regulation and stop the unions. That's how economic development will occur. It's certainly not going to be because Utica now has a taxpayer funded AHL team or because the taxpayers foot the bill for an improvement to Harbor Point. If you don't belive this then you deserve everything you get. The surest measure is to look back ten years and compare it to today. Then, in ten more years look back at today.

You must really hate your depressed life. Do you ever pay anyone a compliment or see the good in anything? You must be a real joy to live with.

People that visit Utica from out of state are shocked at how run down it is. It is pathetic that people get excited about a Holiday Inn or an Olive Garden moving in. Chain stores and hotels are part of the problem. The CITY is dead. There is no down-town to speak of. The economic activity happens in the suburban strip malls.

Go visit a nice city in a state that is not NY and you'll see that Utica has ZERO in common with it. The Weather sucks, infrastructure blows, job markets sucks etc.. what does it say when 90% of the OK jobs are gov't or healthcare.

The only jobs to get excited about are the kind that take wealth from another state / country and bring it in to the Utica area. Opening a restaurant does nothing except recirculate the same dollars around the same area. It does nothing to bring money into the local economy and add to the wealth of the area.
