I lived on West St between James and Parkway in the late 60's and it was a safe neighborhood. You didn't have to be afraid to go out at night.

Back in the 60's I was 5 years old. We walked a mile to school all alone. It was so safe!! Life now is very scary. I feel bad for the parents who have young children now. You have to watch them every second! Sad place we live now. I too wish we can go back........

Back in the 50s and 60s there were NO PRISONS near by.
Blacks all lived in Washington Courts and had their own little community - bars, churchs, grocery stores, etc.
There was a strong presence of the Mafia that kept crime down by "eliminating" and "controling" the criminal element.
Economically, the City was booming. We had many manufacturing business and most everyone earned enough to support their families.
Welfare was barely in existance; nothing like all the handouts like today. Surplus food (cheese, peanut butter, rice) was given out on certain days at the Armony that the poor had to stand in long lines to receive.
I agree - Utica was a great place to live in the 50s and 60s and to bring up a family compared to today's enviroment.
