Been on Shelter Care Plus for 4 years while waiting for Section 8 to kick in. I find out today that Section 8 doesn't accept violent felony offenders or drug offenders. Great, now the program that made sure I wouldn't lose my housing is going to cause me to be homeless. Kind of getting the rug yanked out from underneath me. So if you're on this program, be warned. All good things come to an end.

After four years you don't know it's Shelter Plus Care, not Shelter Care Plus. Get a job and an apartment you can afford without the crutch money.
I second that

Damn you had a four year free ride. Hmmm ever think to go back to school in that time learn a marketable trade. Dont give me that crap no one will hire you because of your background. If you actually had a skill you could get hired, I know I have never asked my mechanic for a background check. Also their is a need for drug rehab counselors they prefer to hire former users. Nope instead you wait patiently for more free stuff to come to you. Well sorry pal at some point the free ride has to end and you should have been planning for it.

I had wondered about that too, LOL! Maybe he wasn't paying close attention to the name of the place. I had actually never heard of this program until a month ago. Someone was murdered in an apartment complex with SPC residents in my area (not involving one of the Shelter residents, though).

I knew that about Section 8 because I had to go to the courthouse and get a criminal background check before I could get approved for housing. I also had to have a job too, but low-income. It may not be that way anymore.

I am a Violent Felony Offender. I put in my application for section 8 as a formality! I will be denied but Shelter Care Plus will pay my rent Forever or until the program is canceled. Been on it 2 years already. It's a big help i am disabled and cannot work. I couldn't live without it. Seriously Thank You for allowing me to get a leg up and avoid homelessness!

In order to qualify for shelter PLUS care you need to be enrolled in either drug/alcohol rehab program or a mental health treatment program and ATTENDING SUCCESSFULLY, thus the PLUS care part of the program. It is not meant to be a life long free ride if you are able to work, but a way to get help until you are able to get on your feet and help yourself. But, like many programs, it is abused and people suck the tax dollars by abusing it. I realize this is probably the unpopular thing to say in Utica, but GET AN EDUCATION AND GET A JOB!

Are there any specific charges that will disqualify you from the shelter care plus program?

Great organization, helped me get my life back on track, when I was a real mess. I will always be grateful.
I have a job I love, and would not have made it without them.
