<quoted text>. Actually I believe the Ahl had a lot to do with this. Abbotsford was not working out, and the rest of the league wanted them gone. So the city and the heat mutually agreed to end that disaster. Glad to see glens falls keep a team. It will be a heated rivalry tween them and the comets. The comets will have some serious scoring in the lineup next season. Some great young talent coming in!!!!
There had to be something in this for the Heat. The contract they had was weighted in their favor and there is no way that they would just leave without some kind of accommodation. What happens to the Abbottsford sports complex now? Heat going to Glens Falls. Vancouver with another 4 years guaranteed on the Utica contract. It should be an interesting press conference today.

There are multiple buyout options available to the Canucks and they are mutual. It won't be announced today but you will see the Canucks in abbottsford next season.

And also about the supposed "four years" guaranteed to the comets...well five years to the flames is being broken. There is no contract that's unbreakable. Just a fact.

No common sense. Oh you're funny. I believe you were one of the people for over a year that exclaimed the flames had an "unbreakable" contract. Ok?! Lol. If the flames got outed how easy will it be for aquilini to bust the comets contract? Lol

Oh and no one cares?? Well at least you do since you commented. Anything else? Lol!!!

The contract still has 5 yrs between the flames and calgary, speculation is calgary will own the new team that is going into abbotsford and fulfill the final 5 yrs of the contract. there is a reason flames people will be at this news conferance. there fore the contract is still intact. the flames wanted out a year ago, this will save the city a ton of money and the flames get to move their team east.Aquilini is out of the picture as the contract has 5 more years.

Quote from on of the newpapers.
There are several drawbacks to having a farm club in the Fraser Valley, so far away from most of the other teams in the AHL. The Heat, for instance, spent more than 80 nights in cheap hotels after milk-run, economy-class flights and late-night bus rides this season; the Utica Comets spent about half as many nights away from home. That extra travel takes away from practice time, which doesn’t make sense for a developmental team.

Even if the Comets moved to Abbotsford or Flames stay, in what business model does having the added expense of all the travel and compensating the visiting teams travel work? Abbotsford would still be the sole west coast team. Abbotsford is 44 miles from Vancouver. Maybe there is a the same voracious appetite for an AHL and NHL team in the same market like Toronto but Abbotsford would again have to give up huge incentives to gain a franchise and are their taxpayers going to do that again? I don't know the answers but it just doesn't make sense to be the lone west coast team.

I agree with another thread, there is no marketable rivalry between Utica and Glens Falls. It’s all about Utica vs. Syracuse. See you next November in the Dome!

Here's what the city of Abbotsford posted on their website:
http://www.abbotsford.ca/Assets/Abbotsford/Ne...

They way they paint it for the taxpayers is this. It was projected to cost $11 million if the Heat stayed in Abbotsford in addition to the $7.2 they've already paid out. The buyout of the contract with Calgary was $5.5 million.

Pretty sweet for the Flames. They get the buyout and whatever economic incentives they'll get from Glens Falls. Abbotsford saves a projected $5.5 million but they don't have a hockey team to play in the $65 million sports complex they borrowed to build in 2007. Good luck to them.

From the city of Abbotsford

"NEWS RELEASE
CITY MAPS OUT “A NEW GAME” IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF
ABBOTSFORD ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS CENTRE
…new strategic direction anchored on finding revenue-positive tenants, improved
operating agreements and increased community access
TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2014 (ABBOTSFORD, B.C.)– The City of Abbotsford is pro-actively
addressing the future of the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre with a new strategic
direction entitled “A New Game”, an integrated approach to the development of the facility
that is founded on securing revenue-positive anchor tenants, establishing improved operating
agreements and increased community access.
Setting out a series of key strategies for the future of the facility as an important regional hub in
the Fraser Valley, Mayor Bruce Banman today announced that the initial precursor of “A New
Game” is the departure of the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League effective after
the completion of the 2013/14 regular season and playoffs.
The strategic direction’s major components – most notably the provisions for expanded
community access and the revised terms of engagement with Global Spectrum, the operators
of the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre – will be phased in immediately after the
conclusion of the existing contract between the City of Abbotsford and the Calgary Flames
(Abbotsford Heat of the AHL) as of June 30th, 2014.
A payment of $5.5 million – which is being allocated from the City’s 2014 operating savings and
unappropriated reserves, meaning there will be no property tax impacts – will allow for the
termination of the existing 10-year supply agreement which was struck in 2010 as part of the
launch and establishment of the Abbotsford Heat Hockey Club.
“We have negotiated a termination that will cost the City less than half of what our losses
would be on the basis of projections related to five more years of the AHL team playing here on
the existing 10-year contract,” said Banman, speaking on behalf of Abbotsford City Council.
“There is absolutely no question in our minds that taking this step with the Abbotsford Heat is
the best scenario financially for the City and our ratepayers.”

Your wrong, but lets say your right. You think we wouldn't get another team like OKC or one of these teams paying huge costs in huge arenas. Heck the devils would probably want to come back. We would be vacant for a year or so. What your not understanding is the heat lose 1.6 million a year while utica makes money. You are not scaring anyone.

Plus they have 1300 season tickets sold for next year already. The season is over and were most likley not making the playoffs so what would esche have to gain by not telling people now. If you were right he would just throw in the towel now. Theres a good chance they could come close to 2000 season tickets

actually there must be a reason that the flames have not committed to glens falls. my guess is they are waiting to see what happens with the canucks. if the canucks are able to pull off getting into abbotsford and get ahl approval then the flems will be in utica. i have been told the flames prefer utica to glens falls. stranger things have happened. who woulda thought the tiny city of abbotsford would pay 5.5 million to get rid of a team. the comets are good at keeping things quiet, just like last spring...... anything can and probably will!!!!!!! i have been told by comets people that "we are all set for next season" whatever team that means.....

Please check the Vancouver Canucks' website tomorrow morning, in which you will find a press release relating to Utica and the Comets. Most important of note for Comets' fans is the following:

"The Vancouver Canucks are committed to our AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets and enjoy a strong relationship with our partner club. A strong base of Utica fans have shown tremendous support throughout the season and the Canucks intend to honour our long-term partnership agreement with the Comets."

Hope to see you folks at the remaining games this year and for years to come!

The Canucks can say whatever they want, the Heat will be wearing Comets' uniforms next season. There is a reason why they did not commit to Glens Falls and there is a bigger reason why Glens Falls Mayor (and chief proponent/welcome-mat for AHL hockey) Jack Diamond didn't have a clue about Abbotsford pulling the plug on the Heat.
(Ya' think the franchise might have mentioned something to him and anyone who knows him knows that he would have ran to the press with this news long ago)
Break out those paint buckets and return the Aud to some form of red, yellow, and black.

The support won't continue if the comets don't start winning. Utica may be a dead town with not much else to offer but nobody likes a loser. History has already predicted it.
