UTICA —

Justice John T Buckley, who rose to become an associate justice of the State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division died Tuesday, according to an obituary filed by Nunn and McGrath Funeral Directors.

Buckley was born in 1936 and served the Utica area in the state Assembly from 1967 to 1972. He also ran unsuccessfully for Congress against other well-known political figures of his day, including Sherwood Boehlert, then an aide to retiring Congressman Alexander Pirnie and then-Assemblyman Don Mitchell of Herkimer. Mitchell won that race and was later succeeded in the office by Boehlert.

He was first elected the bench as an Oneida County Court judge in 1979, and was re-elected to the position for a second 10-year term in 1989. He left that position in 1994, however, when he was elected state Supreme Court judge.

In 1999, he was designated to the state Appellate Division by then-Gov. George Pataki.

Buckley is a 1958 graduate of Georgetown University and Albany Law School in 1961. He graduated from St. Francis DeSales Hight School in Utica in.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Arrangements are under the direction of Nunn & McGrath Funeral Directors.

Somebody that worked at the court house mentioned he gave out years in jail like lollipops at Halloween. The joke I remember going around was that with every 100 years of sentence he gave out he got a free trip to Disneyland - and he went often.

I believe that the jury put that individual away not the judge.

If you were on the A team he was a great judge. If you messed with the law and on the B team you were toast. John T. Buckley didnt have alot of tolerance for crime or criminals.

Was he an honest and fair judge? Not in any sense of the word justice he wasnt. He was in every sense of the phrase part of the "good ole' boy network" and if the DA or anyone in law enforcement had an X on your back judge Buckley would throw you away like a piece of garbage in the trash.

Whats said above is only the truth and factual, what i have to say is i hope judge John T Buckley isnt judged as harshly wherever he goes as he judged the ppl who stood in front of him in his courtroom.

In his own way i think he always felt that he did the "right thing" in all his decisions but as we all know there is only ONE who is perfect and makes the best calls and it wasnt JTB.

Good luck and justice isnt about harming someone who has harmed others, i didnt go to law school to know that and in the end ppl who judge us harshly here will be judged to a much higher degree when their turn comes.

That's a very naive understanding of how judges can and do influence trials you have there.
