I pad $400 last year at H&R Block....its based on what your income is and what amount your return is.....take the other guys it yourself or find a local accountant.
H&R Block does not charge by income or refund amounts, They charge by the complexity of the return.

My wife and I make together about $400,000. We get charged $700 from our accountant -- and usually owe additional money to Obama.

BEND OVER BACKWARD EVERYONE to find another alterative to this place. I asked at the very beginning before I signed the agreement form how much they would charge and they quickly mumbled a low figure that was less than half the price actually charged once they were finished. Once you have started the process and signed the papers you can't change your mind, EVEN if you think the percentage is outrageous. I objected and they pointed out various things that the clerks said "hurt" me and caused a higher figure to be charged by them against my return. NO, you liars - what hurt was the fact that you scammed me by outwardly misrepresenting your fees - undoubtedly deliberately. I have 3 kids to take care of and H & R's fees would have covered the price of their sneakers for 2 years. Shame on you, H & R, for preying on the poor, and especially poor mothers with poor children. What happened to the user laws that I heard were being enforced against them and their peers?

They try to lessen the blow by saying it can be deducted from your refund...IT'S STILL YOUR MONEY!!

what would I expect to pay for a return when I had a sole proprietorship for 8 months and worked for a company for 4 months last year?

I would highly recommend NO ONE use H&R Block. Their fees are hidden, highly abusive and unwarranted. I am a 1099 employee, and I know my taxes are complicated, so I sought help this year. Never again will I give this company my business. While I owed about $500 in taxes (expected), I owed H&R Block about $700 in fees. UNexpected.
Particularly for people who want to claim deductions, do NOT use this service. They charge you for each individal thing you want deducted, as well as an overall charge. For example, I moved for my job. They charged me about $75 just to put on the return that I had moved. They then charged between $25 and $75 for each ITEM on that move: lodging, gas mileage, etc. But you don't know any of this until the return is done and you are signing for it. I'm so embarrassed I fell for going to such a scam, and I will encourage no one to ever go there again.

I will never us HR block ever again. I'm really dumb because I used turbo tax first and had everything ready to go, but I wanted to make sure everything was correct, so I went to HR Block. They made a lot of mistakes initially, and we had to constantly check their work. After all was done, they said they were going to charge us $650, but lowered it to $500. Turbo tax only costs $80.00 at any office supply store, its easy to use, and works great. And, Both HR block and turbo Tax came up with nearly identical returns. and they spent less than an hour total to do everything. I think they are armatures, crooks, and I will never use them again. And FYI, they said they charged per form. What a Joke. Please do not use HR block, unless you like to waste money.

To the contrary, it's not based on your income, it's based on the forms that are used in preparing your return. It's clear either a) you didn't go there, or b) you didn't pay attention to what your bill consisted of.
So - you're either a liar, a sucker, or both.
And if your return was REALLY $400, you must have had self-employment or something beyond a simple W-2, which would have cost you far more at a CPA office than the four bills you paid.

it is not based on how much you earn I paid 300 it was because of the different forms that I need being in in a dual state

Yeah! I agree they are not transparent at all. They tell you they cant disclose any info until they get done with your taxes. They make you sign for a fee if you end up not filling with them (which is pretty much telling you they are gonna rip you off).
I paid 450 ...NEVER AGAIN
HRB does not charge you a fee only if the return is submitted through them.. They can give you an estimate on your return free of charge through the tax calculator online
