I agree the folks claiming it's based on forms, but there's still seems to be a major upswing in costs over the last 5 years. My wife and I filed at H&R block back in 2008 and the cost was $167; we were living in Washington at the time. In 2009 we moved to California and the cost jumped to file was $285. We had a couple of investments to deal with but nothing insane, but the move involved dealing with selling our house in Washington and buying a new home in California so the bump wasn't unexpected. Since our finances had settled down I was expecting a smaller fee than the year before, but our 2010 return was $280 so we saved like $5 for less complicated taxes. Then in 2011 with nothing changing much at home, our return fee was now $366.89 which was a 31% increase for pretty much the exact same paperwork as the year before. 2012 it jumped to $524 which is about a 43% increase. The H&R agent claimed that the tax forms are getting more numerous and more complicated over time, but I'm sorry I don't understand why we should be okay with paying $524 for an hours work especially since most agents seem to have a rudimentary understanding of the tax codes; they're pretty much just using the software that you can use online for a fraction of the price. Yet I realize brick and mortar shops come at a price, but I just get the impression these increases are more about making insane profits than covering reasonable business expenses.

I agree with many above statements. I can say I did not know the reasoning behind the charges. I had always used turbo tax on my own with zero concerns about my refund amount and very user friendly, I'm a social worker so none the less numbers aren't my thing. I started using hr black after having a child thinking ide miss a good deduction somewhere.this year it cost just shy of 300. I'm looking for feedback about form charges. I have 3forms that's it! My w2, interest on student loan and health insurance proof . I have one child. hi to look at the turbo tax on line forms and found I would have figured it out on my own to get the same refund!! Which would have kept an extra 250 in my pocket. it legitimately took her 20 minutes from start to me walking out the door.... So unless they charge 100 dollars a form it doesn't make sense to me. I can say I feel better having them do the taxes but knowing that they are not even accountants is upsetting.

They over charge and they will lie about when they will charge you. I was told the fee would come from my federal tax refund and they took it from my state because it came back first. When I complained they just said this is their "standard policy".

it costs here in nova Scotia canada 15% on the first 300 then 5% on the remaining amount
so with that said if your looking at a $2,000 return
15% of 300 =$45
5% of 1700 the remainder =$85
$85+$45=$130

so of that $2000 return you would get $1,870

i know this b/c i was just there and asked this Question this is what they told me
as for the states i have no clue

I am a small CPA and almost always charge less than H&R block. I agree H&R is expensive, and you can get just as good or better service at a small CPA. You shouldn't judge people and call them liars. It makes your response have no credibility.

To the contrary, it's not based on your income, it's based on the forms that are used in preparing your return. It's clear either a) you didn't go there, or b) you didn't pay attention to what your bill consisted of.
So - you're either a liar, a sucker, or both.
And if your return was REALLY $400, you must have had self-employment or something beyond a simple W-2, which would have cost you far more at a CPA office than the four bills you paid.

So with that being said. Single mom. Couple of dependents.. So filed HOH.. Right ok.. That's a 1040 about $100. Then comes EIC that's about $55 for more than one dependent. Followed by ChildTax Credit. Another $40 bill. Single mom right so a babysitter was needed for the kids or daycare that's sounds like another $40 bill for the child expense.. Not to mention the W-2s that were imputed by the TP another $30 bill. And then comes state depending on the state you paid for the State 1040. You paid for the EIC in the state. So another $50. POM was probably purchased so that's $35.00. And being a single mom you probably didn't have any money when you walked in so you applied for the RAC. That's $35 for fed and $20 or so for state.. That's seems fine no problem there.. You probably had a Great TP.. You know HRB has a satisfaction guarantee that states if your not happy with the experience, service or price you don't have to pay.. Now what every one seems to not read is that applies before you file the return.. That means if you don't want to use HRB grab your forms and go else where.

So your most likely just money hungry during this time if year and depend on your tax refund for survival.. That's where the problem lies.. You need to step it up and pave the way for the kids. Think about it. As a consumer it's your responsibility to read what you sign..

But again I bet you had a GREAT experience with HRB..

All this info can be found posted in ANY HRB office and online..

Potoczny also sent pornographic videos to the parent and instructed the parent to have the child view them, according to Molinelli.

Investigators executed a search warrant at Potoczny's residence on February 13, seizing his computer, digital cameras, and other related material.

Police said Potoczny's computer was subsequently examined at the Utica College Computer Crime Lab where numerous images of children engaged in sexual acts were found on its hard drive.

He was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford court and released after posting a $10,000 bail bond.

Potoczny will be reappearing in the town court on Thursday, March 7 at 1 p.m.

Authorities said analysis of his computer is ongoing and additional charges may be filed.

I've been a professional, California registered preparer for over 20 years. It saddens me when I see the blatantly false advertising of these large firms. I have had so many clients come in for me to look over their prior year return. I just cringe when I see how much HR and the like are charging. One client did pay nearly $500, and as a preparer I am certain it was just a BASIC return, a couple W-2's, a dependent, and Schedule A and EIC. This return I would have charged approximately $185 and that includes the state return AND electronic file.
