How many people does it take to screw in a light bulb? Not many! Well, How many people does it take to produce an Associated Press newspaper at the Observer Dispatch???? In Utica its 30 in the newsroom. The OD has 30 employees producing the news of which 85% is canned Associated Press stuff in the first place. So what happened? Well, you can read about the first time daddy, another article about a reporter and her boyfriend and their vacation or trips, or better yet, read about Donna and Kris and their visits to their relatives. More cupcake journalism and boring stuff. Is that news? Well folks, you will have to decide. Based on the last circulation numbers the facts do not support the newspaper or their website.

So what happened there? When Gatehouse bought the OD they should have cleaned house and got rid of their management. The biggest fish to fry should have been the publisher. They are rooted in the Donna Donovan way. Her idea is if don't like it? Leave! Also factor in the fact that the CEO Mike Reed has received $750K bonuses for the last 5 years while employees wages have been frozen for the last 5 years. Sure good for morale isn't it?

It will be sad to see the Observer Dispatch go. It is too bad that the Gatehouse management didn't take steps to correct their problems. Other newspapers like the newspaper in Schenectady have increased circulation by 5.8%. What happened to the OD?

How did you come up with the 85 percent? What was your formula? Or is that some arbitrary number you pulled out of thin air?

Incedible is oh so right. It will be sad to see them go. Who the hell reads the paper anyways these days? I wouldn't pay their .99 cent price they push on line either to read all the pop up advertisement crap. YNN is all you need.

I worked at The OD for over 20 years and was laid off when Gatehouse outsourced the production department. They wage freeze for 5 years is accurate. Gatehouse is only interested in killing off the newspaper era. They are squeezing every bid of profit out and putting nothing in. The OD continues to slowly cut staff. Some other newspapers are holding their own and care about its workers. I don't tell people not to support the OD, even though I was laid off. But still disappointed and felt that the publisher was just excited the production staff was cut and not her. I never purchased a newspaper since the day I was laid off and ever will. It was boring to read when I was working there. Some content would come along once in awhile that was interesting.

Wow they actually need "30" people in that "newsroom" for THAT newspaper?

Guessing each employee has to write two words for each day's paper then! Wow!
