So what. Instead of using the money to modernize an aging fleet we have to spend the money offsetting labor cost because of poor leadership. When will people get it, the city is not in the business of running businesses.

We have too many fireman for their core function so they manufacturer additional duties at the taxpayer's expense. Count the number of fires in the city then count the number of firemen employed. 90% of the country employ volunteer firemen to augment paid fire fighters. Why not the same for this city? My guess would be politics and abuse of power.

The overtime will never decrease as long as the ambulance is in service. It is a shell game, Brooks assigns men to the ambulance and leaves slots empty for the regular duty compliment, therefore he has to call men back to man the regular compliment costing the taxpayers over 1 million dollars a year in UFD overtime. Mayor Roefaro and his Budget Director Arcuri are not smart enough to realize or they just don't care that the tax payers are being hosed by an egotistical bullshitter like Brooks.

what they are going to do with the money is buy supply's for the UFD and the pay will be the responsibility of the tax payers no matter what our taxes go up they never use the money for weekly checks for the fire man they don't give the fireman their weekly hours and this should be a crime because that money is for the new fireman nothing else no other fireman should receive the moneys in pay it is guaranteed money for the new fireman they do this with every position even the police and other agencies hud city jobs you name it

Its a waste of taxpayer money whatever they do with it. We don't need the number of fire fighters we have. We don't have enough fires to justify the current numbers so an increase is just waste and abuse. One look at the parade and the number of local fire units in the surrounding area should of made that point abundantly clear. How many people should we pay to sit around waiting for the next fire. This is borderline criminal use of taxpayer money.

You have no idea what you are speaking about. Before you open your mouth, volunteer to go to a firehouse, police shift, or Utica school and actually see they do. Its easy to sit back and complain on a website. Believe me, one couldn't pay me enough to be a Utica cop, teacher or firemen. Thank you to our fine public servants.

A great number of cities the size of Utica that have a eroding tax base are instituting a part paid and part volunteer fire department. If this happens in Utica the only ones to blame are the firefighters, cops and schoolteachers that took jobs for the city of Utica but never lived a day in the city. They never supported their own destiny and as far as I am concerned if the city has to do this it is all right with me becasue I worked 20 years on the UFD and all I ever heard from fellow workers on the UFD is that I would never let my family live in Utica because I do not want my kids going to Utica Schools so what I say is f--k them if they loose their jobs. The present administration and future administrations will have to institute this form of public safety because Utica is losing population drastically every year and we just do not have the tax base to employ a fully paid department in the future.

Then you shouldn't be one. I'm not complaining about the employees, I'm complaining about a policy that continues to fund employees we don't need. Just think about the money we're pouring into fire fighting when we rarely have a fire. Instead of getting emotional you could always prove me wrong. I don't see any justification for the current man hours and funding allocated to the UFD. Taxpayer funding coupled with state and federal grants makes me question the entire motive behind the extravagant cost. I gotta believe somebody is empire building, on the take, or pretty dumb. I hope its the latter of the three, because its the easiest to address.

I agree we need no more firefighters and no more police. That grant was made for the bigger cities, like Syracuse, NYC, Buffalo. Our population has gone down, give up the SCAMBULANCE and you will have the workers out of work.

Tell the 3 hospitals in South Utica that you don't need anymore police or firemen!!! They are called all the time. I know because I work at one of the hospitals. These people are needed and more.

Most of the calls are bullshit calls, years ago Doc Falvo handled every emergency call in Utica and the population was over 100000, the only calls that are true are advanced life support calls, they get calls for hangnails, hangovers, etc, they are building their calls to qualify their positions, give me a break that more are needed. Go blow smoke up someone's elses ass.

the reasons why the money is available is because of terrorist attacks because of 911 they didn't have enough fireman in ny city and little citys around ny sent their fireman and this caused the little citys to have a less fireman force so the government is giving more money to compensate the loss if something like this happens again ?
