They announce a sellout and maybe true but there was probably 500-600 empty seats last night. Maybe SU game moved to 7pm, who knows, but a sellout should mean butts in seats. I would say crowd was about 3100.

U can't make season ticket holders go to the games... I know a bunch of people who were going to the cuse game and then the comets afterwards. Cuse game got moved.

This argument is old school. We all know if all tickets are sold they announce a sell out. This happens in all pro sports not just in Utica. Please find something meaningful to discuss. If you ever attended UC games the empty seats are 2-3 times as many.

Comets are on their way out. Lying about the attendance is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Canucks are not going anywhere and if they do there will be 5 teams begging to come here. Also Adirondack will get another team to. Also as far as attendance in the league Adirondack and Binghamton had sell outs in their nhl arenas adding to their ahl total attendance which is not fair because the comets didn't play in Vancouver this year. We made it to see another year so this argument is over

the AHL does not include those special games in the ahl averages.

Good luck with that. The Canucks will be leaving after this season and sorry to burst your bubble there's no one begging to go to utica.

so no one is interested in coming to utica??? i take it that you have personally contacted the GMs and brain trust of all 30 nhl teams as well as their owners and discussed this with them ?? amazing that someone with so much knowledge and so many connections in the world wastes day after day after day on a disaster of a web site telling everyone what he knows........

The AHL attendance figures definitely do count games played in NHL arenas towards the home teams average. Adirondack and Binghamton saw their averages go up significantly as a result. Outdoor games, which draw very well, also count towards the attendance of the host team. Maybe Utica should play Abbottsford in Vancouver as part of a home and home next year. That would cut down on Abbottsford coming east so many times and help Utica's attendance figures which will always be among the lowest in the league since maximum capacity is 3,815. With Portland moving back from Lewiston, Maine to downtown Portland next year and Adirondack moving to Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania next season, Utica may only be ahead of Abbottsford and Albany in attendance next year. The Oklahoma City franchise is rumored to be relocated, possibly to Glens Falls.

Bottom line is the ahl is interested in smaller arenas such as Utica adirondak and binghamton and does not want situations like Albany and Hartford playing in NHL size arenas drawing 4300 and in albany's case 3000. They would rather be in the three I named drawing similar numbers. Plus Utica has exceeded expectations along what a job rob esche and company has done with the game experience. Every friend of mine that has gone to a game for the first time is blown away at what a good time it was. You can't compare Utica itself to the comets. I know Utica is a dump and no one disagrees but the comets are a huge success thanks to the entire Mohawk valley.

All the people worried about the actual attendance versus the tickets sold figures must run the concessions at the Aud. Every sports league counts tickets sold, thus the term sold-out. In the 1980's, many pro teams differentiated the paid attendance and the in-house attendance to provide the number of no-shows. That doesn't happen anymore. Last night's game was impacted by the SU game time change and the snow day Friday which moved many high school sectional games to Saturday. I was in Rochester for a game earler this year and there were not more than 2,500 people there, but the attendance was listed as 4,400. The ugly orange seats at the Aud make empty seats stand out prominently, but if you are pointing to an accounting method as a sign of the health of the franchise, then you need to understand that it happens everywhere--even in NFL playoff games.

<quoted text> I agree. Its not a good atmosphere to be playing in a nearly empty building every home game. But the problem with the aud is the fact that the building is just too small. I was told in the fall that they projected the comets break even point at the 3000 - 3200. So in that respect they are making money. Hopefully they can find a way to put more seats in. The atmosphere at comets games is outstanding, and the team enjoys the crowd noise levels as they have commented on it several times.
Lots of teams have a 4000 break even. Utica has small overhead so its likely less. Where did the 3000 to 3200 numbers come from? Either way they are close to even.

Here is a typical Wednesday crowd at an Albany Devils game. They claimed to have over 2,200 paid attendance for that game. Utica has nothing to worry about and are doing just fine.

I think comets are great. Been to all of the arenas for ahl hockey in ny. Gotta say the aud is near the top. Great atmosphere, fans are knowledgable, aud looks great. Lots of season tickets sold, corporate backing, good job marketing. It makes sense nestled between roch, cuse, Albany, bingo. As long as the ownership group doesn't piss a lot of people off, ahl is here to stay.

The past three Comets games have all been sellouts yet the Topix Trolls still have to find something to complain about.
