The county had a huge surplus. The writing is long on the wall. Get rid of this crook--get him out of office. He uses the surplus to pay his cronies and help himself to huge raises.

Every county legislator who voted to keep the sales tax the second highest in the state (marginally behind New York City) and one of the highest in the whole country, needs to go at the earliest convenience of the voters. That goes for the county executive as well.

How do they brag about a surplus and a pile of money coming from the Oneidas every year from now on and then vote to keep this business and consumer unfriendly tax rate. Mr. Picente just promised $2 million for the Utica Comets and the county can't afford to help the taxpaying public out?

Have a big purchase coming up? Go to a neighboring county with a less oppressive tax rate. Have friends/family/business associates coming in? Tell them the sales tax situation and let them know that Herkimer has hotels and motels too.

Prediction:
In the coming weeks and months you'll see more capital projects coming out of the county. They'll be the kind that benefit the well connected few I think too. They'll definitely be the legacy building kind that politicians love.

Here's a link to a page that shows sales tax rates throughout New York. You decide.

I'd rather have them leave the sales tax where it is than have them reduce it and then have to raise property taxes when the "surplus" magically disappears.

Why not reduce the sales tax and see what happens? Isn't it possible that with a lower sales tax rate consumers will buy more in Oneida County and negate the need for a property tax increase?

You frame this as an either/or situation. It's not. Oneida County has a new revenue stream with the Oneidas and will benefit with lower interest rates on borrowing(bonding) because of the surplus. Just because the county has a surplus doesn't necessarily mean that they have to spend it defending the status quo the way the City of Utica did with their fund balance.

He has to keep the extra tax income so he can GIVE AWAY $100,000.00 to Utica, at his discretion without taxpayer input, so the city can announce a SURPLUS the next year!!!

He also gives a half-baked promise that maybe in a couple years they will see if the sales tax can be reduced. If he uses the excuse he wants to keep property taxes flat lets see when next year's budget comes out...will there be no increase in the prop. tax or propose the minimum 2% they're allowed without legislature approval. Our county democrats are scared to death of Pissente and they fall in line right behind him. Pretty impressive display of power for just a high school graduate.

I hope enough voters aren't afraid of him or the Republican majority. It's time for a change. A big change.

So how do we get the entrenched bums out of the legislature?

In general elections:
- Democrat districts (mostly in Utica & Rome) will always vote for their democrat incumbent.
- Republican districts (the towns) will always vote for their republican incumbent.

So the way to fire them is to force primaries against the incumbents when the turnout is low and a small active opposition can beat them. It will take some citizens to run in the primaries, step up and seize county government back from the politicians. It worked in Buffalo county. It can work here.

Agreed but how do we get good, qualified candidates to run in these primaries? Then how do we get people to turn out for the primaries in meaningful numbers. If the party faithful feel challenged you know they will force a turnout for their candidate.

The number of incumbents that run unopposed is amazing to me. Was it 6 of 29 last time around?

Isn't Erie County (Buffalo) still under the thumb of a state appointed control board?

they will be getting millions from the casino deal what will they do with that money bank it since everything is being paid with tax dollars all ready think about it what are they going to do with the casino money ,,, my answer is hire more people and then when casino funds are down they will tax us again ,,, the thing we all should be doing is planning on what to do with the casino funds bank it and bank it for three years and then use the news funds to spend on items but no hiring with these funds because we will only dig our selves a bigger hole goes with the state casino funds also

Wouldn't you rather have sound, honest budgeting and controlling spending to lower both sales and property taxes?

Truth, I believe the city of Buffalo is still under state control board, but not Erie County.

We can make it happen, but planning it on Topix will give the entrenched advance notice. This is something that has to take place quietly and swiftly before the party machines can react.
